G'day,

I'm a new member to this site and new to Aviation photography ... which I am becoming addicted to!

I was just wondering if there is anyone out there who would like to meet up to take some shots and maybe give me some tips.

I'm amazed at the skill of the photographers on this site and would like to learn to have 10% of their skill, as I reckon that would give me some great shots.

I've got a keen eye for composition (with my Canon EOS 300D) but don't have much post-processing experience.

I'd love to hear from anyone who knows of some great places to shoot around the airport.

I've discovered a few with my dogs but am keen to find more.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
Cheers
Sean

The usual spots are:

- Old tower car-park (for RWY34L/16R operations)
- The airport perimeter road (for the crossing runway landings). There is a space to park right under the approaches, but it's no stopping. Park elsewhere and walk.

The best place though is the observation deck above the international terminal. It's open again, and provides some great photo-ops of 16R/34L operations. It's also nicely shielded from the wind and there are some places to sit. Any lens in between 200-300mm is fine for here, although a fix 300mm might be too long for some shots.

Depending on how the weather is next week - I might go out to the airport one afternoon after work. You can join me if you wish. Send me a private message if you want.

Thanks for your help CPD and Chris. (The Wiki link was especially helpful)

I've discovered most of the spots you mentioned CPD but didn't know about the observation deck in T1. (I was wondering how some of the amazing shots of aircraft - with the city in the background - such as: http://www.airliners.net/open.file?id=1065872&size=M where taken from.)

Shep's hill looks like a new place to try also.

Like I said I'm new to all this and I'm 'two from two' ... rejects that is ... but I uploaded these photos hastily and without much editing (These are a couple of the first time I went spotting!) ... I still like the pics though! They are at;

(The unedited original of this shot is on my desktop!)
http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/r.../big/20080107_SiaA380Syd3Jan08.jpg

I like this one because of the place that the Cops set up an RBT (Random Breath test)
http://www.airliners.net/addphotos/r...tions/big/20080107_Asiana777-1.jpg

I'll send you a message CPD and take you up on your offer.

Thanks again for all your help.
Cheers
Sean

I like the A380.  Smile I see it most mornings when I leave for work - if I look up at the right time - you don't hear it easily.  Smile

What did it get rejected for?

Doubt that was from T1 deck but Gabriel has many others from there...

Im am visiting Sydney in April from the United Kingdom and would be interested in meeting up with some local spotters.

Wondered what the beach area is like for viewing and also plan to watch the 380 arrive and depart.

Will be staying in the city centre and have a rental car.

Would be good to meet some australian friends

It got rejected for, "Reject reason: quality- contrast, soft, oversharpened"

I'll send you the original. Maybe you could edit it better - feel free to keep!

Quoting F4phantom (Reply 6):

No worries F4phantom. Just send me an e-mail closer to the date.

The A380 usually arrives around 7:30am (but anywhere from 7-7:40) and departs between 9 and 9:40am.

Along the fence line in the beach area you can almost touch the planes as they taxi by such as the people on the fence in these pics;

Also this type of pic was taken from that fence line:

I was just wondering if aircraft phtographed from T1 observation deck suffer from being backlit during certain parts of the day. If so, please advise which part of the day that is. Oso u mentioned lens between 200-300mm. What crop factor is that based on? Thanks a zillion. Fablee

In the morning, they will be backlit. Afternoon, you've got the sun in the right place.  Smile 200-300mm will get you not much crop at all. A 300mm lens will actually be too long for some photos.

Regards.

Thanks very much, Cpd for speedy response. Fraid I wasn't clear enough. What I meant was, were you referring to SLR lens ( where crop factor such as 1.6x has to be factored in) or compact camera (where 300mm is 300mm) when you mentioned 200-300mm? Thank you. Fablee

I'm referring to SLR lens - as in what you'd buy from the stores, not for the DSLR effective focal lengths. When I went there last week, I had a Nikkor 300mm lens on my D80 and it just slightly too long for some shots.

This photo was taken at 137mm on a 1.6 crop factor camera

equiv. to a 219mm lens on a 35mm film camera, there was likely some cropping but at this moment do not have access to original to illustrate how much.

As a followup to Reply 12,

This fairly ordinary shot (well lousy then) of a QF A333 is full frame at 137mm (x 1.6 =219mm)

http://www.pbase.com/chrisg/image/92256948.jpg

So the TG 744 was not cropped much at all

Cheers

Chris, is the SYD T1 observation deck open air or is it enclosed by glass/a fence? Oso are the majority of a/c movements in the morning or afternoon? Is there an evening peak hour like SIN? Thanks yet again. Fablee

Fablee,
Approx half of the Obs deck facing the runway is open, with widely spaced stainless wire above waist height(similar to yacht rigging so no obstacle to photography, the North wall is glass but has several holes(about 20cm) that make the approach-City skyline shot easy, There is an afternoon heavy departure period rather than 'peak" from approx 14:00 to 17:30

Cheers
