Hi All,

Sigma has announced a couple of telephoto zoom lenses which have potential for aviation photography - both have OS (Optical Stabilisation - Sigma's name for what Canon calls Image Stabilisation and Nikon calls Vibration Reduction).

APO 120-400mm F4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM

APO 150-500mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM (should have called it the "Bigma Mk.2"):

An interesting note, these lenses are available on Oly, Sony, and Pentax mounts which all offer sensor based stabilization. So you could reasonably use one or the other depending on your needs. These are also the first third party HSM/SSM/whatever lenses for Sony/Minolta mount.

Son of Bigma would probably be a better term, only a 50-500 can be Bigma mk 2  Wink

Courious on how the 150-500 will perform... I had a 50-500 but wasn't that satisfied (Vignetting etc.)

OS will be a good thing in this range.. I'm really looking forward to the first test reports....

Has anyone seen a price-tag for this one yet?

G'day All,

I think that now Sigma made this lens a 150-500mm zoom, they should have made it a straight f5.6 lens. Might have made it a bit more expensive, but much more interesting.

I assume it's going to be similar to the Canon 400mm IS zoom. I'm guessing about £750-800, is this realistic?

I'll be interested to hear the reviews as I might well get a 400mm lense this year.

Not really fair to compare a huge 10x zoomer to a (yes, also huge) 3.33x zoomer, IMO.

That's very interesting about the 120-400 lens. Notable improvement over the 80-400 is the addition of HSM. I would hope this lens would price out below the 80-400.

According to the German Sigma website prices are as follows

EUR 899 for the 120-400 (first online shop offers for EUR 778!)
EUR 1,099 for the 150-500 (first online shop offers for EUR 998!)

So they should be around USD 1,300-1,400 / USD 1,600-1,700.

I'm not only interested in the performance but also the handling as they're both pretty heavy. So in case anyone finds a first review on the net, please post the link.

I stumbled over those 2 lenses last weekend. Definitely interesting for me.
Can't wait to see some reviews.

Those prices are pretty good. I would be interested in the 400mm as the Canon 100-400 L series is getting on for twice the price of this new Sigma.

I'd also like to know how effective the OS is. Especially for the 500. Will you be able to do proper handheld shots of both static and moving objects?
