Does anyone have any opinions on this lens for spotting?

Yes, I use (and like) my a lot.
Relatively compact, fast focusing and VR - all for under $600

Great lens, not to heavy, in good weather conditions really sharp, buy one and you will see.

Best zoom in that price range you will find. I own the 70-200 VR and 200-400 VR, but still carry the 70-300 when I'm traveling light.

I use mine with a D300, I love it to pieces. It's fantastically sharp in proper lighting, it's quick, and yeah... can't say anything bad about it.

Yes its a great lens, I used it on my D50 and now my D300. Most of my shots of aircraft in the air on the DB have been taken with it.

I use it with my D80 and it seems they were made for each other! Sharp, comfortable, not too heavy and fast. My 2008 photos have all been taken with this combination. Go for it.

I too have 70-200, D2X and D300...going to Cardiff/Amsterdam next week, would like to travel light...would like NOT to bring 70-200...actually going for wedding, not for aviation pix, HOWEVER, have a 9 hour layover in Amsterdam and would like to do some casual spotting, think it's worth the $600.00?

Yup - that's exactly why I bought it. Didn't want to risk the 70-200 getting stolen or lugging the extra weight around when I wasn't doing pro work. You'll probably find that you pick it up instead of the 70-200 on more casual spotting days, or days where you plan to hike or cycle for several hours around the airport. Well worth the money.

Very good lens, and about a third of my shots on here were taken with it.

In fact, I have a spare for sale. Unopened box. . .
