40D + 580EX II + BG-E2N Question

Hi all,

I have a 40D and the 580EX II external flash. I'm considering getting the BG-E2N battery grip for it. I find it really inconvenient to have to carry AA batteries for the flash (given that I have to carry the extra charger for them too). Does anyone know whether the grip can actually provide power to the flash? I'd rather carry extra batteries for the 40D insteaf of AAs. At least I will only need one type of charger.

Thanks.

Tony

Nope, it won’t power up the flash.

Short and concise answer.  Smile Thanks! Seriously, is there any other (practical) way of powering the flash, apart from AAs?

Tony,
You are pretty much out of luck.
Canon sell (or at least did) an external battery pack for the Speedlite range, it did little except provide more capacity so you could take more shots.

Quantum Instruments make a range of external battery packs with a wide range of functions including faster recycling times.

Neither of these options achieve your goal of reducing the load, they add capability instead.

Perhaps another option is to ONLY use AA cells, the BG-E2N has a carrier for AA cells that is intended for use when charging facilitiess are not available.
I have used AA cells in my BG-E2 on a 30D with Sigma50-500 and got several hundred shots.
Not sure how it works with rechargeable AA though.

Cheers

Canon have a battery pack called the CP-E4 that would work well in your case. It's an external pack and holds 8xAA batteries.

Thanks for the info, once more. I'll look into the external packs but, yes, as you've pointed out they won't do what I'm looking for... I think I'll just have to carry both chargers for the time being...

Had it for 10 or so months. So far, so good! The only problem with it is me: I just need to learn how to use it better!  Smile

Tony,

Reason the flashes use these AA cells is that the lithium ion battery packs are terrible at quick delivery for charging things like a flash which need a lot of voltage very fast. Unfortunately, your only real option is the external battery packs, or a lot of spare cells...
