Best Superzoom P&S?

I purchased a Fuji S700 with 10X Optical zoom last year thinking it would do ok for aviation shots. It's not terrible but I am not pleased with the speed or sharpness. The 10X optical zoom is "contained within the camera" meaning the lens moves internally and doesn't extend outside. Does this make any difference? As much as I'd love a DSLR, I'm not prepared to deal with the initial cost of the body + $100s for glass. Is there a really good superzoom high end P&S model which would be capable of producting A.net worthy images? I want something capable of a fast FPS rate.

The Canon S5 IS has appeared quite a few times, though it seems a lot more for static shots than in flight. Takes at about 1fps.

I don't think that any p+s have a particularly high frame rate. You get what you pay for.

I have a Sony CyberShot H2 as my second camera (my main is a DSLR Canon 400D).

The point&shot camera (H2) is good for taking photos of aircraft parked at terminals or taxiing, but is very slow (shutter and focus) for landings and take-offs (if you want to take speedy photos, forget it!). If you need speed, take a DSLR (there's good and cheap options such as Canon EOS 350D/400D/450D, Nikon D40/D60 or Sony A200/A300/A350).

Sony has the advantage of the body-built image stabilizer - so you don't need to buy expensive lenses such as Canon IS or Nikon VR. Another advantage is the compatibility between Sony DSLRs and Minolta DLSRs and Xi film cameras : you can find good and cheap Minolta lenses and use it with any Alpha body.

Unfortunately, Sony cameras produces high noise on pictures taken at high ISO (800 or upper). In this case, Canon is a better option.

I shoot at low ISO anyway (never above 200). I like to shoot take-offs and landings since I don't get to go airside (except when I'm inside the plane) too often. I saw the Sony DSLRs at the store but I don't know how reliable they are. Lenses for Canons and Nikons are so much easier to find.

Stick with Canons A720 IS. S2 IS and S5 IS , shoot 8AP , low ISO and -1/3 wb on a sunny day and do not complicate your life with changeing lenses!

I have an old Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ30, which I still take places where I don't trust myself with the DSLR (such as fishing trips on boats... see left image) - had a photo accepted earlier this month.

The B1900 pic was taken with the Lumix, too, just to show that, contrary to popular belief, P&S cameras can be used for things other than static aircraft.

Of course, the FZ30 has been replaced by the FZ50, and I have to admit, I don't know whether that's still the current model or if they have come up with a new one already.

It's quite possible to shoot aircraft in flight with a p&s. It does however need a different approach from a DSLR. You have to estimate the amount of zoom you need in advance of taking the photo, because you will have no time to recompose. Then you need to half-press the shutter button (to make the camera focus and set exposure) a moment before the aircraft fills the frame. This eliminates shutter-lag when you do take the photo. It's not a foolproof technique: it needs practice and you will continue to have missed shots, but it can get you good results.

My first 950 pictures on this site is taken with a Canon Powershot G5; a high-end (for the time) 5 megapixel P&S camera that is not even classifies as a superzoom. It is much slower than a DSLR but it can get the job done.
