Spotting At ORD

My first post here on the forums. What would be a good place to go plane spotting at ORD besides the Target parking lot near 22R? I had some from that spot and tried to upload them, but they got rejected.

You can try to contact Gabriel Widyma who does ORD. He gave me map of ORD. Check with him if near 22R is a good spot for ANet. He didn't reply me back again for my visit to ORD so I didn't go ORD. So I don't know if 22R is close enough to be quality for ANet

Here's my favorites...

For arrivals on 28, go to the dead end on Scott St, by the Chicago Aerospace Center buildings. Scott St. runs parallel to Mannheim Rd. There always seems to be a lot of people planespotting there on the weekends.

For arrivals on 10, go to Beeline Dr, which is right off of Elmhurst Rd. This street is practically lined up with the runway, so planes fly directly overhead. I usually go down Beeline Dr, and then take a left down Meyer Rd for side shots.

For arrivals on 14R, take Elmhurst Rd to Arthur Ave. Sit in a parking lot or in the street, depending on day and time.

Those are the places I like, but I am sure there are lots of other places that people on here have been to.

Manheim Rd, turn west on Seymour Ave. Go all the way down. Great view of 22L departures or 4R arrivals in the morning.

If you wanna go spotting at ORD let me know...I can show you some places. I have a couple of shots here on a.net from ORD but I only started spotting recently.

Apart from the mentioned spots, you can also go down York road to get some 14/32 pictures or on York and Beeline to get pictures of aircraft on approach to 10R. You can also go to the Metra train station between 27R and 27L and get shots of aircraft going to both runways.

I have just moved up to Chicago, and am planning to do some spotting and photography at ORD. Which runways do the cargo and international flights typically use? Does anybody have a ORD map with the runways labeled they can share?

It's hard to say which runway it will use, it depends on the day and traffic pattern being used. It also depends on where the aircraft is coming from. Most typical patterns are the following three:

1) Runways 10, and 4R are used for landings with 9L also used if it gets real busy. Runways 32L and 4L used for departures with 32R used sporadically during this time as well. With this pattern almost all heavies land on 10 including all international flights and cargo planes like DC-10 and MD-11. 4R gets all the domestic traffic with an occasional 757 or 767 thrown in as well.

2) Runways 28 and 27R used for landings with some seldom 22R landings as well. Takeoffs on 22L and 32L and sometimes again some random departures from 32R. In this case it is a pain to try catching anything as it can come in on 28 or 27L with equal chance since they are parallel. However 28 has a good spotting location next to the Aerospace center. A lot of internationals and heavies take off from 32L. The rest use 22L but not as much.

3) Runways 10, 14R and 22R used for landing. Runways 14L and 22L for takeoff. This is a fairly predictable pattern. All flights from the east(and Europe) usually land on 22R. All flights from west/northwest land on 14R(usually). All flights from west/southwest land on 10. For example, today I went to runway 10 to catch the DC-10 coming in from Memphis. Coming from southwest it landed on 10.

Keep in mind a lot of cargo aircraft arrive after sundown usually in the middle of the night and takeoff very early morning. Eva Air and Fed Ex have some flights during daylight with 747 and DC-10 but stuff like DHL and Fed ex 727s all usually come in at night. Same with UPS MD-11 and DC-8. International Lufthansa MD-11s can be seen during the day sometimes. Alitalia always come at night.
