Jumpseat And Cockpit Photography?

Hi Guys!

I am flying home to Canada next december. As I am an ATPL Pilot in training I just wonder if it is possible to enter the cockpit (while plane is in flight) in order to have a quick conversation with the pilots. Or even Jumpseat while landing? Wohoo that would be thrilling!
I know that this is generally prohibited, especially after 911 but do you know of cases where pilots made an exception?
Flight will be from Munich to Toronto. B767. I don' t know any AirCanada staff Sad

Unlikely, but do what i do, write a note to the Captain and hand it to the F/A while boarding, explain your passion and you would like to see the flight deck.

You have about a 0.5% chance that you will be let in. Its grim, but still half a chance.

It has worked with me before in the US.

Hi there,

as you already stated allowing people into the cockpit is generally prohibited nowadays. Only allowed are people who are part of the crew or positioning crewmembers/airline employees.
Very few exceptions are granted; your best bet would be to friendly ask a cabin attendant to forward your request to the commander who has the final decision.

Do you have an ID badge? If you have an ID card from the training school you fly at you can hand that to them and see if that works.

I would bet not a chance. Even licensed corporate pilots for our company cannot visit the cockpit/jumpseat with their friends flying commercially in Canada, so your Air Canada chance is nil.
Not to be sterotypical, but in the hyper-security sensitive US of A I bet even asking gets you zip-tied to the seat armrests.

The rules in the UK at least are the flight deck is off limits to all but crew and specifically allowed people from engine start to engine shutdown.
We do allow pax up after shutdown...if they're fast. We have a home to go to....

I'd suggest you to ask the chief flight attendant upon boarding. Explain your situation (who you are, why, etc) and make sure he knows your seat. Once less busy he'll take care of you and the captain will decide.

I work in the industry and i usually get access. Quite rare to be in during landing, although it occured a few times after 911, but much more easy in cruise during quiet times (when all are asleep). This was on european carriers so it may be more difficult in north america.

Last month on my way to LAX from CDG i asked but was denied and told that some passengers had complained of passengers entering the cockpit on previous US bound flights so the policy on US bound flights was more stricly enforced.

No. The rules that govern this are laid down by the regulation authority. In the UK,at least at a certain major using B744 and B772 on international routes, the rules forbid entry by pax unless previously approved. For the Capt to use his discretion would be dealt with very seriously and I suspect he'd be on the lookout for a new job.

A senior MyTravel A321 captain was suspended maybe one year ago because he allowed a football player (soccer for you people overseas) to jumpseat to override his fear of flying.

Where's the world come to....gaaaaah. Glad it's still possible without the bull**** in some parts of the world.

as far as i know, some spotters often manage to get to the cockpit on regular flights here in Russia. Once upon a time I was also curious how to try to do it, by the way a flight with KrasAir was ahead of me. In fact I was pressed for time so I never tried that day. But still first of all I decided to ask at the largest russian aviation forum. And I got some useful advice:

1. When you ask such things - never mention the flight and the airline. And the type also, hehe. You know, it’s a small world! Someone can know about it so that you'll fail at best.
2. Come up to the F/A after the plane has reached it's place of destination and the passengers are getting out.
3. As has already been mentioned above, explain your reason correctly.

Maybe you will be understood. But remember, it generally depends on the occasion, the airline and the aircraft. Surely it's no problem if this is An2!!  Smile

And dont forget to buy chocolate for flight attendants and some vodka for pilots!  wave 
It works! I know!

My dad works for Air Canada. Is there Any (even 0.1%) chance that I could get lucky and get up to the flight deck while flying regionally within Canada. Say YWG to YYZ.

If yes, how on Earth would you even begin to start the idea of yourself going to the flightdeck. Any tricks or "things to say"

Quite right! To enter the cockpit during the flight (especially intl. one) is hardly possible if you have no acquaintances in the airline or at the airport who can put in a word for you so that you'll be trusted and allowed to the flight desk as a result.
My friend is a F/A in Austrian Airlines and I wondered if he could lead me to the cockpit if I flew DME-VIE while he was on duty. He couldn't answer for sure, just told me he would try to. So you see, it's a very special thing.

But to get to the cockpit on the ramp is a possible mission available for an ordinary person with no friends in big aviation and interesting too, isn't it? Besides, you will be able to have a short conversation with the pilots as well.

Absolutely correct.  cheerful  Just appraoch the flight deck when you board the plane, and as long as you don't look like you just woke up out of the ditch, you'll be clear sailing.

although it is very unlikely to get on the jumpseat, it is still possible with some luck.
About two weeks ago I had the jumpseat on an A300 of a big German airline and last weekend a friend was upgraded to row 0 on a 738 domestic flight within Germany. Unfortunately the plane had only one jumpseat so that I had to take a "normal" seat.

In both cases we did not ask for the jumpseat explicitly but my friend gave his logbook to the crew.

So, in rare cases it is still possible to get on the jumpseat, depending on many factors and also on the mood of the crew.

That's been my only jumpseat ride to date... B727 MEL-SYD-MEL and MEL-PER-MEL and it was one of the most thrilling experiences ever. That was a freighter though. I don't think the chances are high on a commercial service.

I had a jumpseat landing twice with german airlines after year 2001 (approach Fuerteventura and Milano Malpensa). Asked for the reason why it´s possible after this terror shit one pilot told me: "Here in the sky we decide if anyone can come in or not anyway what the US-security wants us to do....." In 2007 I asked for a cockpit visit during the flight from Paris to Hanover: No Problem. The girl pilot on the left seat was very friendly an interested in my aviation hobby. Jumpseat would have been possible on this flight if the weather was better at destination. So I had no luck and walked back to my seat....
But I had other converstions: on a flight from Hanover to Crete and back I asked for a cockpit visit....the stewardess was nearly angry about such a silly question. No chance for a visit....not even for the childs of the pilot she told me....

In fact I wait until all the PAX have gotten off the aircraft, then ask the FA or pilot standing at the door, Could I please take some pictures of the cockpit. Be quick about it, because like some one said earlier in the thread "they have homes to get to also".

I have never had any one say no to me.

PHL - LGA (on a small turbo-prop)
then to Toronto, and then onto Vancouver. ( on Air Canada) and am very interested in getting in the flight deck to take pictures.
Is there more of a chance getting into the flight deck, since the flight isn't in America, but rather in Canada?
Also, I saw that a lot of people were saying "just ask," and just making sure, they can't do anything (arrest, etc...) to me just for asking, right??
And finally, I'm currently a student pilot; might it be helpful to bring that up when talking to the F/A??
