I as some of you have, had a photo published in a periodical. At the current time, I won't mention the name of the periodical. It's a some what well known publication for the industry it serves. I was asked, and gave permission for a photo to be used back in October for inclusion in their publication. The photo appeared in the article they mentioned a short time later. I waited about a month and a half before inquiring about payment for the photo usage. I have only had contact with one person at this company, so they were the person I talked to about payment. After many emails back and forth, I was told I would be paid next week - which would have been last week. On Friday of last week I emailed the person back reminding them about payment. As of yet, I have not heard back. Usually when sending the emails to this person, I would hear back almost immediately. At the moment, I am under the assumption I am being ignored. I ask you for advice on how to proceed.

Thanks.

Some companies usually take a while to get back to people about images they have used .
I would wait a little longer and see what happens.
Cheers

did you tell them before you sent the photo that you wanted money for its use? If you didn't mention that before, I woud say good luck in them to pay you.

This scenario sounds very similar to my first experience selling photos to a publication. Everything was laid out very clearly from the start so I was quite patient. When the issue finally rolled out and I had not heard anything I contacted them again to follow up. They told me payment would be issued once the cost breakdown of the issue had been completed. As part of the deal, I was told I would receive a copy of the issue. I received my copy of the magazine first and payment followed later. I received payment about a month after the issue had come out.

Now some of the more experienced folks around here might be reading our posts here shaking their heads, but I didn't know any better. I didn't want to come here and ask for help since I was ridiculed once before for not "being able to handle a sale on my own." But for me, all worked out in the end. I'd say be patient and keep on top of it. I was told, as stated above, some take time before issuing payment so that kept me from assuming the worst right away.

Good luck.

If it's a reputable magazine you usually shouldn't think they won't pay you. They have the budget just for that, and the word would spread very fast if they wouldn't.

With bigger companies / magazines it often takes quite a while for them to get all their ducks in a row.

A phone call works better than an email by the way, not so easy to get ignored!

Cheers,
Florian

It's been almost 3 months.

In the initial email asking for permission, they mentioned a pay range depending on size of the photo.

Last resort, different countries, so it would be pretty costly for me to call them.

Let's try it this way.

The magazine in question is Airliner World. The photo appeared in the Dec. 08 issue. The person who initiated the contact is Richard Maslen who stopped replying to my emails.

Hopefully someone here may know someone else to contact over there.

Well, that would explain why this sounds similar to my experience. I sold some shots to another KEY Publishing title. Although I eventually got paid, there were times during the process where I tried to contact them but got no response.

I've never had a picture in Airliner World.  Sad But I can tell you magazines like that take forever to pay up. It was 3 months before I got a cheque from a national newspaper.
How many times have you e-mailed this bloke?

Go3Team,

I've had a few images published in Flypast in the past, another title from Key. Had no trouble, very pleasant staff and I know quite a few other Brits have had images published in this magazine. I can't remember what the payment time was, but I don't recall being unhappy. 3 month payment terms are not that unusual amongst businesses in the UK, though I don't know what Key's terms are.

I know payment was handled by their accounts department, not the editorial team and came in the post. Hopefully it is due to you very soon (3 months from handling by accounts, plus postage time perhaps?). I would be disappointed to find out that Key are poor payers, hopefully it is just the 'sausage-machine' taking it's time...

Best regards,

Jim

I've had quite a few shots in Airliner World over the past time, never had an issue, I'm sure you'll get paid eventually.
