What Am I Doing Wrong With These Shots?

Posted (5 years 4 months 2 weeks 4 days 1 hour ago) and read 4075 times:

I took around 10 pics of a Springbok A319-100 departing FAPE from runway 08 the other day (@ 300mm) with the settings (mode Tv, shutter 1/500, iso 100, AI focus, Partial metering and Daylight white balance. Of these only 1 came out nice. I'm not expecting them all to come out nice, but I was hoping more than 1 would. All the others were out of focus, anyone know where I might be going wrong ? By the way I know the basics and have had alot of practice, just wondering if someone knew why this was happening and how I can fix it ?

I used the Canon 400D with the 100-300mm lens !

It's very over-exposed, which often happens with this type of shot. The side of the aircraft is well lit, however you're also shooting a lot of the bottom of the plane, which obviously is much, much darker. Depending on the metering selected, this can fool the camera and result in over/under-exposures (usually the former) and contrast issues.

I think the main problem is the lens which i assume is the kit lens being 100-300mm,At 300mm the quality isnt going to be great compared to say 100-200,Its the same with my 100-400 USM lens,at 400 the images arent as sharp and quality wise as good as they are in 200-300 range.
The further the distance of shooting the more rubbish/haze your shoot through in the air.

In the image the rear of the plane looks quite good,just around engine and nose the quality is abit distorted.

Maybe shoot more at a range of 100-200 which can limit the shots you get but quality should be better,other factor is also amount of heathaze in the air aswell.

Yes, shooting at the maximum zoom of all lenses produces softer results than shooting in their 'comfort zones'. I'm assuming you have the Canon EF100-300 USM? While this lens is OK for what you pay you must remember it's still a budget piece of kit, and won't give you the same results as lenses over twice the price (i.e. the L range).

1/500th shutter should be OK at the full 300mm but personally I'd try for 1/640th. You also didn't give the aperture used, which will have a big influence on the final image. Try closing it down to a figure above F8 (F10 or 11) as this may help. Bear in mind you may have to up your ISO in order to attain a good result. Finally, play about with the different metering modes (I tend to stick with evaluative and centre-weighted depending on conditions) and experiment with AI Servo focus mode.

I tend to use Av mode mainly, and tinker with the ISO and stop comp. to achieve a sufficient shutter speed. Many of Canon's lenses have F8 as their sweet spot but I know a few that perform better at F10 and 11. Also, I tend to use only one focus point (usually the centre one).

I agree with Karls above post,I tend to use Av and go for F8-9 and seems to work quite well but i guess everyone is different,Best thing for you to do is go do some practice with it and try different settings in different conditions and find what suits you best with the camera results.

Same here. In such sunny conditions, F8-9 and ISO 100 should work just fine - atleast they do on my Canon. As far as lens performance is concerned, though a 100-400mm will produce less than satisfactory images at 400mm, I have some shots accepted here that were taken at full 400mm - what made the difference was the clear, crisp air.
