Hi all

I was very interested in this latest upload from aviation photography expert Andrew Hunt:

"Saudi Arabian makes for a pretty picture" was the photo comment.

What Andrew fails to mention is the horrific looking building on the skyline.

This is Changi Prison.

I have to say that this shot makes the prison look "OK" but I have seen it from a different angle and can tell you I felt sick when I looked at it.

Maybe I was the thought of going home the next day.....maybe it was the thought of of being "sent inside" after being caught at the 'out of bounds' area that Andrew took me to view some aircraft......who knows........but it is one horrific building. I NEVER want to see inside it.

I made my feelings clear to Andrew.

I left that spotting area with Andrew commenting 'Just think of the nice aircraft the inmates could see from their cell windows  Smile

Regards

Hey Gary, just to add to your words. I used to live in Changi back in the early seventies. I do not know if they are still there but I can recall going to peoples houses that back then over looked the Golf Course just outside of Changi Village (where you could see the airport before it became what it was today) The had Rusted Steel metal doors that were built into the Hill literally in there backyard where the prisoners used to be housed.

Gary,

I was waiting, wondering if your sharp eyes would pick that up........and sure enough you did. True what you say, looks better from this angle, but still imposing. Although nothing like that day with murky skies!!

Hi Gary,

Prisons are built to house criminals and the like . . . what do we expect? Mansions with picturesque gardens and spas?

Just joking . . . but I can imagine it looking far better outside than from the inside. This structure was built in the mid-1930s and when completed, it became a very timely home for local, British and Australians captured by the Japanese Imperial Army that occupied SIN from 1942 to 1945!

But all this does not detract from the fact that Andrew has again shared with us another great shot from Changi.

KC, in Europe that is indeed what you can expect from a prison.
Each inmate his own luxury apartment with satelite TV, private bathroom, etc. Many get to go home for weekends too.
Many Europeans are getting sick of prisoners having better facilities and sometimes better food than people on unemployment benefits or minimum wages.

If im not correct arnt some prisoners executed on friday mornings over at Changi Prison? I remember hearing something of this nature when I was in Singapore not to long ago as well as it being possible to witness these executions. I always wanted to know the truth regarding this! I can imagine the executions would be those in prison for drug related crimes. After all, on my arrival immigration card coming in from LAX, in red words "Death to all drug traffickers". And yes I agree with Gary, a very manacing looking complex indeed! thanks for any info!

Cheers!
Brian

Whilst it is true that some criminals are being executed (extremely infrequently) by hanging - it is not true that you could witness it. It is a totally private affair.

Apologies for going off-topic. There are indeed some private homes along the fringe of the prison that enjoy a great view of the traffic landing on 02L, and part of the ramp on the southern end of the west apron of Changi Airport.
