Hello out there to my fellow aviation fanatics..i was wondering if anyone out there lives in the DTW area and spots there. I'm flying to STL in a couple weeks and have a layover in DTW for a bit. I would just like to know the good places to go to..is there an obs deck or anything?

Hi!

Well, DTW obs deck has been closed for a while now. Can I assume you will be flying Northwest? If you want to stay in the airport.. lots of windows, but facing only runway 21R/3L. Not bad. If you want to step out, go to the main ticket counters, go up the stairs to the parking deck crosswalk (bridge) and the parking deck will give you a cool view of the airfield. It's getting cold outside, so you might just want to stay indoors!

I was wondering the same thing. I might go to DTW in Jan.

How big a lens would you need if shooting from the parking deck?

The Detroit obs deck has been closed i think for 15 years. When I lived there way back it was also closed.

From the parking deck.. it really depends.. i find myself short of using 300mm. Here is a tip- if you find yourself in the parking deck, level 6. On the far side (where the airfield is) go to the center, that will give you the best shots, if you on one end, the light posts from the ground parking lot get in the way.

The new parking deck in 2001 will take you RIGHT NEXT to the center runway- I can't wait for that!
