Watermarks....

I recently came across this photo in the top 24 hours: http://www.airliners.net/photo/Air-France/Airbus-A340-313X/1623361/L/ its a great photo but the watermark unfortunately covers almost everything aviation related and takes away from the shot. I fully understand and respect the photographers decision to put the watermark on their photo and they don't usually bother me, but this is the first time a watermark has affected the viewing experience of a photo.

Note, I did not start this thread to flame the photographer (there has been a few recently) , but to bring to light how the rampant misuse of photos has affected photographers and this site as a whole.

this topic has been beaten to death over the years.....if you don't like watermarks, break out your wallet..... Simple, effective.

Please try to understand the point I'm trying to make instead of all the First Class Members posting "I don't see a Watermark"... I know you don't and that's not the point of this thread.

Now the point of this thread is ill repeat: " but to bring to light how the rampant misuse of photos has affected photographers and this site as a whole."(one of these being the increased use of watermarks, thus causing a decreased viewing pleasure) not pay if you don't want watermarks<

Well you learn something new every day... I didn't realise first class members didnt see Watermarks... Does this mean every photo I upload and put a watermark on the First Class members dont see the mark? If so, then it's pointless me putting them on...

For the record, I try to make sure they don't obscure the aircraft when I put them on.

"View photos in full splendor without watermarks! Some photos on Airliners.net are protected with visible watermarks. As a First Class Member you get to view the originals, without the watermark (same copyright restrictions apply - you may view the photos, use as wallpaper etc but other use require the permission of the photographer)."

Wow... well my excuse when I signed up in 2005 was that I wasn't a photographer then... Guess when I read it I immediately opened the dump valve. Nice to know, though.

...just means the cheap thieves will have to choose the non-watermarked images....anyone that wants to take one without for what ever reason just has to pay before they steal. Full size images downloaded here can be printed at 5x7 quite nicely, even larger for some.

Well what can you do? It isn't this sites fault people steal photos. They took a measure to make a watermark to combat it and on some occasions it ruins the pic. I don't get what more we can do. It's life.

That explains something then... I see little postcards being sold at the AVP at MAN and photos seem to be ones I recognise from Anet or the other site. I wonder if people see their own photos there...

At the 2007 Australian Air Show at Avalon I was with my friend Glenn Stewart and we bought an Official Programme for the day. In one of the centre pages I saw this pic:

I said to Glenn "Hey look, it's your pic!"

The look on his face was one of slight pleasure it was his pic, but slight anger because no-one had asked him if they could use it, or given him credit for the picture. I think he got compensation for it because it was used in a programme. What rights do people have if they find the AVP are selling their photos without their knowledge? Even if they are credited?

.....depends...can you afford a lawyer?, do you want to hire one and try suing them? Sometimes an email to the offender will work, some will just ignore you betting you won't spend the money to chase them down. Even if you can get them into court, what you may get awarded IF you win isn't always great.

I wouldn't necessarily want to take them to court, but a mentioned earlier...

Surely as the copyright holder of a photograph used without permission, the offender wouldn't have a leg to stand on. Like I say I wouldn't necessarily want to take them to court, but if it was my photo used without my permission I'd want some form of compensation for it.

You've never looked at one of your own photos after it was accepted?

Yes, but it just didn't click... I just figured they'd forgotten to put the watermark on... All makes sense now.

The only good part about it is really that most people don't know this, so hardly anyone would buy a fc membership just to get the image without one.

As for watermarking, it simply has become a necessary evil for photographers if they put ANYTHING on the web. Everything else is just careless and screams "take me".

A company started to use a photo of mine (without watermark back then) early this spring, and they only paid up after countless e-mails, calls and letters.

Sorry, but I'd rather spoil the viewing pleasure for some than waste my free time on chasing thieves around the internet.
