A while back I posted a link to a practice solo flight I made with my new Canon 7d... I got a few questions about how it was hooked up to the com system (sporty's cell phone addapter into the camera and into the co-pilot headset jack) and how I set the camera up in the cockpit (it's a masterpiece of mouse pads, wood, rubber cement, ductape, and a tripod bolt to screw the camera down). so here's a link to an iPhone photo of the camera set up on the panel during my first solo cross country, and the accompanying video...

couple other videos to boot, the first and third legs of my second solo cross country to Palm Springs, and Chino...

Cool vids!!

I'm really impressed by the image quality. This 7D is quite an amazing camera.

Wow that's really cool! Thanks for sharing! That camera has some pretty awesome quality. I like how you rigged it. Pretty sweet overall. You make me miss flying back home in SoCal hah. Indiana is boring to fly in.

I especially like the 2nd video as you climb out before your turn that you can see the JetBlue landing. Pretty neat.

I just got über-giddy when I saw this thread. After watching your first couple of videos, I started doing patterns around KSNA at least once a week.  Smile These new videos didn't disappoint in the least.

The 7D really has a nice video output, and your setup just makes the videos that much better with the stability it maintains.

A question for the pilot: Was it windy on your solo day? It seemed like you were getting thrown around out there.

Nonetheless, great videos and thanks a lot for sharing.

Wow, great videos - especially the sound you were able to jury-rig from the comm radios!

Well done, coming from a fellow DA-20 driver. What do you think of the Diamond? Looks you're a lucky one with the GNS 530 in the panel Smile

BTW, here's my lame-o attempt (G9 superclamped to the glareshield = vibration!)

Hey thanks everyone  Smile

Noah - about the turbulence... are you talking about the flight from chino to SNA? it was bouncing around a little there while I was picking up the ATIS. You fly around this area?

Ryan - I Like the DA-20 A lot, and that 530 is nice... I don't have much else to compare it to though... I flew a DA-40 last night since the 20's were both in the shop, one is getting its overhaul and the other is in for its 100 hour. The 40 is pretty sweet with the G1000, but I think I like flying the 20 more though... its small and responsive... its not like you're sitting in it, it feels more like you're wearing it!

Nice video too! seriously try the mouse pad and wood, it works great, I might actually try adding a little bit more weight to the back of it. It sits on the edge of the instrument panel, which tends to vibrate alot... a little more weight on it would probably help dampen it.

Yeah, the Chino to SNA flight. Looked a bit bouncy, and also looked bouncy/gusty on the landing. And no, I don't fly around there...at least not in real life. I'm stuck back here in the cornfields of Indiana.  Smile

I've been trying to avoid a camera just laying on the glareshield (you never know when turbulence might hit)...I'll keep playing around with the Super Clamp method. I do agree with you, though...I do need some sort of damping. Perhaps affixing the camera strap to something would help with the wobbling around. There's quite a moment arm between the glareshield and the stud that I have the camera mounted to.
