Hello everybody,
i'm new here but i am already used to airliners.net! my screen saver is since a long time a plane or an helicopter from a fabulous airliners.net photographer!
I'm french, 30 and i work for the french army, i'm in the Balkans at the moment.
I'm very fond of photography, i love taking pictures during my flights and i love shooting planes around airports!!!
I have a Canon 350D with a 18 55 and a 55 200 (basis kit!) for 4 or 5 years i think which today doesn't fit me very well anymore.
I would like to change my configuration, and i have found the following items:
- canon 7D
- 70 200 f/2.8 L IS USM
- 17 55 f/2.8 IS USM
or - 24 70 f/2.8 L USM
and a canon x2.0 teleconverter

i am always taking pictures that's why i would prefer a f/2.8 because i don't only shoot planes! (my family, portatraits, landscapes...)
What do you think about such a configuration?
Thanks for your help!
I will try to buy my new configuration during my trip in Balkans in order to make an order in America because a friend can provide me his American APO adress and prices are less expensive than in France. I think i will only buy the 7D in France.
I hope i will have my new canon before coming back to France because there are a lot of great things to shoot here! Yesterday, a german Bell UH1 landed in the snow, in a great IMC weather with all the lights switched on!! i was regretting to not have my canon with me!
Kind regards
Fred from France

That's a rather nice set-up, but stay away from the 2x extender as it degrades image quality too much. Go for a 1.4 for that extra reach.
Both 18-55 and 24-70 2.8 are excellent lenses, just remember that the 18-55 is not weather sealed and a bit sensitive to dust. And since I spent a year in the Balkans 1994-95 I know it's very dusty at times
The 24-70 will make you loose some on the wide side. Weather sealing, or wide angle, the choice is yours. There is also the the 16-35 if you are looking for a 2.8, but that one cost big euros too. I went for the 17-40 myself, not as good in poor light as a 2.8, but it's wide, weather sealed and carriest a small pricetag for what you get.

A good camera and good lenses.

N.B. If you buy in the U.S. and are stopped by customs when coming into the EU, you may be charged import duty.

PHOTO SCREENER

Salut, my gear is very similar to what you listed, except that I am still using an old 40D and would only upgrade to a full frame body. I chose the same set of lenses for everything else I photograph apart from aviation. I am extremely happy with my 70-200 f2.8, the 17-55 f2.8 is also very sharp most of the times but it doesn't feel as solid as an L lens. Good quality for the money, though. The 2X extender is nice but only works with L lenses. I have had photos accepted here that were taken with the 70-200+2X, if the light is good the photos will also be better. Don't expect anything magical.
I will not link my own photos but if you're interested in what to expect you can find me easily.
Best regards,
HGabor

Quoting Fredmathieu (Thread starter):
- canon 7D
- 70 200 f/2.8 L IS USM
- 17 55 f/2.8 IS USM
or - 24 70 f/2.8 L USM
and a canon x2.0 teleconverter

You might want to add something wide to your selection, for instance the 10-22mm.
The rest of the set up cannot be beaten.

Fine glass you are about to acquire!

The 24-70 is razor sharp and one of my preferred lenses.....

One thing you should do, swap the 2x extender with a 1.4. The loss of quality with the 2.0 is obvious.
In terms of reach you should do fine with the 1.4. With the 7D there is enough MP available to crop a bit.......

ok, i will prefer the 1.4 transconverter.

i don't know yet if i will prefer a non weather sealed 18-55 or a 24-70. the idea of a 10-22 is interesting. I think it would be better to have weather sealed equipment because i'm used to pictures in a wet environment like in the center of France (auvergne) and in foreign coumtries. To my mind, 7d is tropicalized and it would be better. So the good configuration would rather be 7d+70-200+24-70+10-22 or 16-35+tc1.4

I don't think that there will be problems for customs: in this case i will post the packages and rreceipt to France with a military package in a ;ilitary plane. I will just have my bag with the materiels with me in the military plane.

thank you for all your informations!
kind regards
