What shall I do? One of the photos he wants is a digital image and one a print. Worth doing? He lives in the US and me in the UK I feel the profit margin is not really sufficiant (or is that the wrong way to look at it?!)
Just wondering what ya all think
Oh and if I do sell. What do I do about the digital image? resize to 4x6 and print it myself on to photo paper or.....?

He already told you that those are the shots he is missing in his collection, so
in this case I (this is my point of view) would charge him only with the expenses, let's say on two 10x15cm paper prints plus postage.

These sorts of situations are difficult when I get them, as far as I'm concerned, because the requester is probably very genuine and only wants to add to his personal collection - I don't really like to disappoint in such situations. However, the process of getting a pic printed, posted to someone in the US, and recovering the costs of doing so from that person, is always going to be problematical. That is, in many ways, why I am looking forward to the airliners.net print service that Johan has mentioned - when this comes along, some one else can take on the effort!
Its really up to you and whether you want to help someone out, and whether you can be bothered with all the mucking about getting prints and sending them and recovering the money involves... But maybe the answer is to tell him to wait til the airliners.net print facility is up and running (Johan was, I think, suggesting it wouldn't be too long) - if he wants the pics, he'll wait.

Pricing issues aside, I've found the easiest way to deal with foreign requests is to burn a high res scan onto CD and send that - the individual can then sort out getting it printed. Yes, there is some risk to this, so be aware that the requestor could be a publisher posing as a collector, or the requestor will use your disc to flog multiple copies of the image - only you can decide whether or not the risk is worth it.
As to payment, this is a real pain, as exchange rates and/or transfer fees are crippling and make small transactions pointless. Personally, I take a small risk and ask for small payments in the form of dollar bills, wrapped in paper sent through the post. I've not lost any payments yet. I don't bother exchanging the bills as sooner or later I, or a friend, are bound to visit the sender's country.

I don't bother going to the lab, or messing around with slides. If you have a pic of sufficient size, you can get it printed digitally. About 1500 x 1000 pixels is ideal. I get these done at Jessops Internet Printing Service, which charges 50p per 6x4, dropping to 30p if you have enough done in one go (minimum order value £5, with free postage). I generally ask for 70p-£1 a pic (or maybe $1 a pic plus postage for our American cousins) which covers my expenses plus a bit on top. As I am usually in the US a couple of times a year, payment trasnatlantic isn't really a problem - dollar bills in an envelope keeps me happy. Is it worth the time and effort? Not really, but then again, I don't really want to disappoint people who like my pictures enough to approach me for copies. They just sometimes have to wait a few weeks for me to get my a$$ in gear, that's all!
I would just warn about anyone requesting any number of pics. I happily printed about 30 photos for a guy in Malta, who kept emailing me asking when I could get them done, and then when I finally got them back, he disappeared, leaving me with 30 prints I didn't want or need, and no cash. Too trusting, me!

Here's what I tell them: "Go hop your happy @** on an airplane and shoot it yourself". JK! I've gotten 2 emails from him in the past 3 weeks, either I don't reply or give an excuse not to sell it. I don't trade photos/slides, so I really don't understand his need for it, I like going out and shooting it myself anyways.

I usually send upload the photos to a internet lab and get them back developed on photopaper. I charge the costs of development * 2 plus postage.

Just FYI, I am in the process of getting an order done for someone in California (I live in Rhode Island and go to school in Ohio) who wants 8x10 glossy prints from prints and slides. I am going to charge him $12 (roughly double the cost of the print, taking into account my personal time and resources used) a print and he pays the shipping.
