I'm planning to go to California next week to fly a small piston plane over VCV and MHV to get photographs with a fellow photographer. Are there any photographer pilots on the board who can give me some tips with dealing with ATC and this "unusual request." I don't want to get all the way out to California, airborne and about to enter VCV's airspace and be denied.

Thanks,
HH

Easy HH,

Tell 'em who you are, where you are and what you want.

I would love to fly a cargo plane full of rubber dog shit out of Hong Kong!

Basically, as long as your resonable, don't disturb other traffic, etc. etc., then they should let you do what you need to do, unless there are specific rules prohibiting this. Try going online to a spotters website there, if possible too.

Hope this helps

I'm sure there was a recent discussion on here about that - and I seem to remember that the direction of the conversation was that air-to-ground photography was forbidden.

Possibly from other airports? There should be at least one of them close to VCV and/or MHV.

A spotters/photographers website for MHV/VCV (ex. MSPspotters) would be appropriate for you to view anything regarding photo oppertunities.

I didn't have any problems taking pictures (air-2-ground) at VCV at Mojave.

At VCV, we just asked permission while approaching from LAX. Permission was granted, various altititudes and also touch & go.

At MHV, also no problem at all for air-2-ground shots. Departed at MHV with Dick Rutan for some circuits at various altitudes.

I'm not surprised, you have some great photos.

Also, If you know anyone who works for ATC there, you could ask.
