Because Canon made only little toy lenses - people like Reuters had to molest the Zoom-Nikkor 1200-1700mm F/5.6-8.0 AI-P lens in order to get the required shots on their Canon cameras!
I thought you were thinking at the long end..........but I can see the point of the 14-24 indeed.
But then again there are quite potent third party options available with both Canon and Nikon mount.
Canon's own 24-70/2.8L is quite good though so I don't see the point in this area.

We also had 1200-1700mm Zoom-Nikkor, in addition to the 200-400 which I have. A 6mm F/2.8 Fisheye Nikkor is another of our gems, along with the 300mm F/2.0.
