Sony was at PMA and introduced some interesting cameras but what i'm most interested in is the A700 replacement and the 500mm G series lens.

The information can be found here: http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/21/s...nds-off-leaves-much-to-the-i/?s=t5

some of the biggest news is the A700 replacement that will apparently be able to shoot 1080p video! I've been using a sony A700 for a while now and I think this will be a really nice improvement.

The a700 replacement is supposed to be a speed/FPS monster, and there's been some really interesting tech talk about how they could go about it without simply brute forcing it.

Essentially, you don't introduce a 500mm f/4 lens without a fast body to go with it.

i'm excited about the speed, i've been getting more into action photography and on my A700 the auto focus seems to be pretty slow so if they can get the speed on that up i'll be really happy

I'm tied to Nikon, so no changes for me - but that 500/4 looks appears quite impressive. Not the first time I've seen that lens, I had a look at it in person last year. It isn't nearly as big as it looks. In size, it seems quite similar to the Nikon's 200-400mm F/4.0 VR lens.

If the Sony 300/F2.8G lens' price in Australia from Sony is anything to go by, the 500 F/4.0G should cost just on AUD$20,000.

ya that's the downfall of these lenses is i need another job just to afford them! the company i work for allows me to get a 20% discount on sony products but of course they don't allow them on the alpha line.

I don't know how they manage to sell them at such huge prices. Perhaps they have a captive market - but a 300mm F/2.8G at nearly AUD$15,000 at last check is hovering around the same price as the AF-S VR II Nikkor 600mm F/4.0G "N" lens which is absolute premium grade top of the range stuff.

The price here isn't too far away from the AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/2.8G ED VR II Telephoto, that's in US$. I'm thinking this 500mm will be around$2500-$3000 but i guess we'll find out soon

I would probably blame whoever distributes the lens in Oz. The Nikkor 300 f/2.8 goes for about $5,200 here in the US. The Sony 300 f/2.8 is about $6,200. In contrast, the Nikkor 600mm goes for about $10,300.

I expect the 500 f/4 to be about $8,000-$9,000 when it debuts. The Nikkor 500 f/4 (a brand new design) goes for about $8,500. I know of five guys who will buy one as soon as it comes out, too.

The 300 f/2.8 is kind of an oddball. It cost a lot back when it was a Minolta branded lens too. The main reason the price is so high is that it's completely hand made and has a lot of inefficiencies in its manufacturing, even though the optical and build quality are excellent. The new G/Zeiss lenses that have been coming out have been price competitive with their Nikon and Canon counterparts because they've been using different manufacturing techniques.

Sony's own store in fact. It's shockingly expensive - though the cameras, funnily enough are reasonably priced, along with the rest of the stuff they sell (Muteki home theatre systems, Bravias so large they'll barely fit through the door, etc).
