Hi all,

Which monitor calibration tool do you use? I'm looking into getting one and I'm leaning towards ColorVision S3P100 Spyder3 Pro, as it seems to me to be what most folks use. Will the Express version be enough or am I better off with Pro? Any alternatives (and I'm waiting for my good friend Dan toi chime in!)?

Thanks,

Tony

Everybody knows my opinion on these matters - go with XRite (or used Gretag equipment). EyeOne is reliable and easy to use and I've trusted prepress software to it for many many years - where color critical means you have to do the job over if you screw it up.

Tony the Express version is fine for monitor calibration. I found that if you are using a MAC then the Eye One device works better with the MAC OS. If it a windows box then they both perform the same, Colorvision, Eye-One etc.

It would be interesting to know what the screeners use here with their Dell Monitors and the colour setting are used as I guess they are all the same.

EyeOne

I take it it's what they call i1Display on their web site? The LT version seems to be similarly priced to Spyder3 Pro...

On Windows, Datacolor/Colorvision Spyder whatever they call it now should be fine. I've got the older Spyder2Pro.

However, the new screen when it arrives has its own hardware calibration device.

Hi Chris,

So I ended up ordering the Spyder 3 Pro. It seems as if the hardware on it is a bit more up-to-date than EyeOne.

I read lots of reviews and it was a tough choice. It seems that many folks really liked one of them and got terrible results with the other. I don't know whether it was "operator error" in some cases. But also lots of folks seem to have got great results with both. So, I think I'll be OK with the Spyder.

Hi Tony, yes i1Display is what Eye-one used to be and they are part of X-rite now anyway. I have a Spyder2 and an Eye-one device as stated above. Don't forget your monitor colour will drift so check it every couple of weeks.

Any word on what the screeners use here or is there no need to calibrate their Dell monitors ?

BTW, I have a stupid question. Apparently, Spyder3 has a suction cup and attaches to the screen, right? Is there any chance of scratching the screen in the process of attaching / detaching it?

Aha! Good tip. I'll make sure I read the manual this time.

Thanks,

Tony
