Hey!

This summer, i am planning to get my first DSLR camera, and my preferable choices would be the EOS 450D (Rebel XSi) or the Nikon D5000. I was looking at getting a 1000D, but it didn't have any video function, which i need in a DSLR. Now i can't decide between the 450D or the D5000. That's why i need your advice since you guys are experts.

Buy whichever of the two feels nicest in the hand.

Then buy the best lenses you can afford - lenses contribute far more to image quality than camera bodies..

The camera does not matter. A good photographer can make great photos with any camera. A great camera will not improve a bad photographer.

Thanks for the advice! I just want to know which of these cameras are best, so that it may help me in choosing the right camera. It's not final though, and now, the Sony A100's really tempting plus it's cheaper than the two.

Not much to choose between them, really.

They will both get the job done.

Buy whichever brand you think has the best lenses for your needs. DSLR bodies get obsolete fast - you can't sell a Nikon D200 for more than 200 dollars now.

Go Canon!!!

Better lenses and generally superior to any other type.

If you ask me canon seem to have an edge on nikon.

I have a 450D, absolutely love it. But you seem to imply in your post that video recording is a must, and the 450D cannot do that.

Thanks

Better lenses

At longer focal lengths, perhaps. Nikon's wide-angle primes and zooms are better.

Quoting conoramoia (Reply 4):

Nikon has better build quality.

I'll have to rule out video recording from my preference, anyway, i can live without it.
So 1 vote goes to the 450D and none for the D5000. How about the Sony A100? Is it any good? I'm tempted of its price and i want to know what are the pros and cons of the A100.

A few moments ago you said you needed it.

Think carefully about your needs before you buy.

Canon and nikon have a wider range of lenses than sony.
Also,I'd go for the 1000D the difference between the 450D is pretty much only 2 megapixels and 1000D is cheaper, which means more money for lenses.

He does have a point. Maybe i should get the cheaper 1000D so that i could spend more on the lens.

It's what I did. 10 Megapixels is plenty and lenses are most important.

Also Most of Ron Stella's stuff was taken with a 1000D and and L range lens, from what I understand.

If price matters, then the Sony A200 (not the A100 as i said earlier, sorry) is the obvious choice. However, i've heard that Sony lenses are much more expensive compared to Canon or Nikon ones. Is this true?

Hi Conor, thanks for including some of my photos. The Iberia / Cruise Ship and JetBlue were taken with the Rebel XS / 1000D and the Canon 70-200 f/4L NON IS.

The FedEx was taken with the 40D that I purchased used at some point in mid November and the 70-200 f/4 IS

The Canon 1000D with the 70-200 f/4 (if you can reach your target aircraft with that range) is a great setup. 1000D as you know works great 100-200 ISO. Tough to get 400 ISO accepted here on Anet. But to be expected. 70-200 any model is an incredible lens too.

Thanks for the opinions guys. I think i will get the 1000D because it's noticeably cheaper than the 450D, and if i get the 1000D, i can have some change to buy a nice lens. Thanks again, i really appreciate your comments.

I like my 450D, but I found that I had to turn the Auto Light Optimizing feature off, as it seemed to adversely reduce the midrange contrast.

I own a Nikon D90 and like the way it feels in my hands. I've handled a D5000 at a store and found it was too small. The right hand grip around the battery housing is too close to the lens. I don't have large hands, but my fingers were almost touching the barrel of the lens on the demo camera.
