Hi all,

Over the next week - two weekends - I'll be making an aviation photograpy road trip. The general route will probably be Cologne area (Breitscheid small airshow) - Roitszschjora Yak fly-in - Berlin area - Prague - Salzburg - Munich - Tannheim (Tannkosh) - Pirmasens (small airshow).

Now, I like almost anything except gilders and ultralights: airliners big and small, (Russian) cargo aircraft, all military aircraft, helicopters, light aircraft (old ones much preferred), preserved aircraft, wrecks, you name it. Scenic, trouble-free locations obviously preferred.

Can you give me some tips? I'm aware of the big airports, airbases and museums, but what smaller airports, GA airfelds, heliports and museums should I drive a couple the extra few kilometres for? Where am I likely to encounter East European-built cropdusters or helicopters, for example?

It's obviously a rather general request, so please just give me some places you really like yourself! It's a brainstorm session.

Thanks very much in advance

Peter

Hi Peter,

it is not directly on your way but there are some great small GA airfields up in the north of Germany. Especially Helgoland and Harlesiel have a nice scenery and also the traffic with the BN-2 Islanders is not bad. Helgoland can be very busy on weekends when a lot of GA pilots fly over there to refuel with tax free avgas.

Hello Stefan,

That is too far off for this trip, but it's a nice idea, the kind I'd like to hear!

Peter,

going from Cologne to Berlin you have several smaller airfields on your way (like Paderborn with some occasional RAF charter flights this year, also with VC10 if you are lucky). I would recommend to do a stop at Braunschweig EDVE (base of DLR research aircrafts like Falcon 20, A320, etc) and both fields at Magdeburg, EDBC and EDBM with a stored IF Tu134.

Near Berlin you have the museum at Finow (besides the well known Gatow) and the GA field at Schönhagen/Trebbin which will be the main GA field once BBI is in service.

From Berlin to Prague via Leipzig (based AN124 and DHL hub also with Tu204 an An24) and Dresden (Airbus freighter conversion facility).
Or via Cottbus (http://www.flugplatzmuseumcottbus.de/lfz.pdf) and Dresden.

Munich German Museum: (http://www.deutsches-museum.de/en/flugwerft/)

Near Munich check Manching (German Air Force Test Center) and Oberpfaffenhofen (ex Dornier field).

From Manching via Donauwörth (Eurocopter Plant), Augsburg, Lechfeld and Landsberg (GAF), Memmingen to Tannheim.

Then maybe a southern route via Leutkirch, Friedrichshafen , Villing-Schwenningen (www.EDTS.info/museum/exponate/), Freiburg, Strasbourg, Baden Airpark (Söllingen) to Pirmasens.

Have fun
Ralf

Hey Peter,

this is not necessarily on your route but you might consider passing by Bremgarten where Meier Motors ( http://www.meiermotors.com/ ) have a big maintenance and restoration center for warbirds. You might be able to catch a glimpse on one of those beauties.

Thanks Ralf and Thierry, some nice ideas there. The plan is slowly taking shape.

Hi guys, I returned home Saturday night, had very good weather almost the whole week and a lot of fun.
I skipped Berlin, Salzburg and Pirmasens in the end, still did plenty of driving... Just in case anyone is interested, here's my broad route with some highs and lows:

*Day 1: Soest-Bad Sassendorf (small airshow)
*Day 2: Breitscheid (ripoff airshow, hopeless for photography), Buseck (hobby museum), Eisenach (stumbled on Ju 52 D-AQUI), Leipzig-Halle, Roitzschjora (Yak fly-in), Dresden, Bautzen (airshow, Li-2 HA-LIX)
*Day 3: Czech airfields northeast/east of Prague (nice small stuff including an L-60 Brigadyr and a Finist)
*Day 4: Letany, Kbely museum (very disappointing, poor for photography, with many aircraft you can't even come close to), loop of small airfields and preserved aircraft locations north of Prague (Tu-104, PAC-750)
*Day 5: Pribram (L-410), Zruc 'museum' (a dump, but with a newly delivered An-30), Plzen-Line
*Day 6: Oberschleissheim, Munich (nice museums)
*Day 7: Jesenwang - Landsberg - Mindelheim (stumbled on Grob factory), Memmingen - Tannheim (remarkable event for such a tiny grass strip, but too few old aircraft for me)
*Day 8: Friedrichshafen (new Dornier museum), Schwenningen (crap museum), Stuttgart (stumbled on Lufty A380 visit)

Cheers,

Peter

Hi Peter,

good to hear you had fun!

One question concerning:

Quoting ptrjong (Reply 6):
Breitscheid (ripoff airshow, hopeless for photography)

Why's that?

Thierry

Well, I had heard there would be little or no display flying on Saturday, which wasn't made overly clear to the general public. I could live with it, I figured that in exchange for a 10 euros entrance fee there would be a nice static show and arrivals to be seen. But the runway was perfectly backlit, the main flightline was waaay behind the runway, so far that one could hardly recognize the aircraft, and the static show only consisted of a Transall and thee military choppers dumped into the ropes with lines tightly around them.

I left after an hour or so, as the sun was going to be bad all day. I hope anyone had fun, but I doubt it. By the way, spotter-tickets with special access could be ordered in advance, but I felt that at 30 more euros they were far too expensive for what was just a small airshow. I hope you do things better at Bitburg, Thierry.
