I will be going to IAH to do some spotting at night. Not to take pics, but just to look at planes. Can anyone give me detailed directions to the spotting area right before runway 27? Also, can you see the planes good at night? Thanks!

The spotting area is off of Lee road between Will Clayton Pkwy and Sam Houston Pkwy. It would depend on where you were coming from as to the directions I would give.

Here is a map on Yahoo that shows Lee Rd on the East side of the airport. The spotting area is right next to the end of 27.

http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?Pyt=Tmap&addr=IAH&city=Houston&state=TX&slt=29.982401&sln=-95.342003&name=George+Bush+Intercontinental+Airport+Houston&zip=&country=us&BFKey=&BFCat=&BFClient=&mag=8&desc=&cs=9&newmag=7&poititle=&poi=

Not sure about how visable the planes are, I've never been there at night

Sorry ILS,

I would have responded earlier, but I have been away at Galveston for the New Years weekend and my girlfreind will not let me near the computer when we are away.

The info that Jason just posted is spot on as for getting to Lee Rd, however to further expand on this, if you are taking US 59 into IAH, proceed up Will Clayton for almost a mile (stay in the left lane) and you will see a Lee Rd. sign, take the crossover to the opposite side of Will Clayton, then proceed to the far right lane and upon doing that you will see Lee Rd off to your right. Upon turning onto Lee Rd drive for half a mile and you will see the viewing area to your left..and thats it!

As for 'night' spotting, well you can see the planes, though they are not all that well illumnated. The official times that viewing area is open is from 6am-10pm after that the gates are closed. Believe me after dark it gets a little freaky out there ..if you know what I mean, thus the recent viewing times that have been imposed.

This area is becoming very popular especially on the weekends, sometimes it can be difficult to locate a decent place to park.

Anyways, have fun.

Thomas

Is there a lot of crime or something?

No...no crime, but a lot of drinking and carrying on! A lot of the local H.S kids like(d) to hang out there at night, however the police watch the area which often discourages any rowdy kids from showing up. I sometimes photograph there at night (take a look at some of my photos) and I have yet to have a problem.

Most that visit there during the daylight are families with kids and at night couples looking to 'park' (even I have done that on an occasion)!..... but as with anything there is always an element of risk, more to folks like me with expensive camera gear than just a spotter.

Don't sweat it! Get out there and have fun.
