Some interesting photos with the 28-300mm zoom-nikkor from a D3X camera body. It would seem this lens is reasonably sharp. Has anyone here had experience with this lens using it on a FX format camera body?

This would seem a quite useful Swiss Army Knife of lenes that could cover a wide range of uses.

I got to try it out on a D3S at the Kennedy Space Center NPS trailer.

1. Everything was sharp. I didn't pixel peep in the corners at f/3.5, but the launch pad (3.4 miles from the trailer) was exceptionally crisp.

2. Zooming was smooth until about 210mm, then it got a little tough as you twist through 250. I assume this was just because it was less than a few weeks old.

3. It extends quite far (as you might imagine) which threw me off. When extended it reminded me of my 70-200 2.8.

I was really very impressed, and were it not for a replacement camera being much more important I would definitely have that on the list.

Good, thanks. I'll consider it as a general purpose lens. I would be using it on either D3S or D700. I won't get it right away - but later down the track.

It will minimise those occasions where I need to use two cameras with different lenses. I hate walking around with two cameras hanging off my shoulders. Not fun at all.
