Hi,

Folks here have been real helpful with advice about lenses, and that helped me upgrade my game quite a bit. Now I have a question about these lenses - are they decent? acceptable price range? Any significant defects? (Like the Sigma 70-300 lens that strips it gears after a while)

sigma 135-400mm F4.5-5.6APO AF/MF zoom

and

Sigma 400mm f5.6 APO Telephoto Lens

I like the fact that they are APO, and below $200 for now anyway on ebay.

Thanks for your help.

michael

Both skips in my opinion, you have to be careful with the older prime 400 APOs as some older ones have chips incompatible with newer cameras. Sigma is liberal with their application of the APO label.

I'd look for the following lenses:

Minolta 100-300 APO (D) (cheap, compact, good IQ)
Minolta 100-400 APO (D) (maybe, slow AF, kinda spendy for what it is but decent IQ)
Minolta 75-300 old version (big beercan)
Tamron 70-300 VC USD (the new one, I had a chance to use it and really liked it, a real bargain at $450)
Sony 70-300 G (more expensive, good image quality)
Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 (Excellent lens if all you want is 70-200)
Sigma 50-500 (Used it for years, some drawbacks but overall a good lens. Haven't used the OS version but I'd stick with the 70-400 G instead)
Sony 70-400 G (the best of the best, worth every cent)
