Hello everybody,
I might be going to SIN to attend a course (nothing planned now) and am thinking about doing some spotting. I have found below thread about this topic:
As I like aircraft photography better when I have nice backgrounds I think that the observation deck at the airport hotel seems to be better for me. I have a few questions:
Has anything changed since the year of the above thread (2009)?
Are there still two observation decks open to the public as mentioned in the above thread?
Is the observation deck a public place where everybody can go or do I have to pay to go there?
I understand the observationdeck has glass but is it glass you can photograph through without reflections?
Are these photos taken from the observation deck (if so, which ones)?
Are these night photos taken from those public observation decks? As I will need a tripod for night photography, can I do that? Will they send me away when they see me walking around with a tripod?
Any other additional information is welcome of course.

That thread is a month old, all the information is current.

All three terminals have observation decks but if you're going to be taking photos, only the newly refurbished T1's observation deck will work. You cannot get to the edge of the glass for T2 and T3's observation deck, so one cannot get decent shots without some panels blocking.

It's a public place.

As I haven't been to the refurbished T1 observation deck yet, I am not sure, but judging from the photos from that spot, reflections shouldn't be a problem.

Of the first five photos, the last three are taken from the observation deck at T1.

The Air India Express photo wasn't taken from the observation deck. A 300mm zoom might be slightly on the small side for a B737 sized aircraft.

Of the last five photos, the first two and last shot were taken from the public observation deck at T1. I haven't had problems bringing a tripod, but perhaps others can chime in if they've had any other experiences.

Lots of good food in the food courts in all three terminals. The aircon is also nice, and there are lots of bathrooms throughout the terminals. Changi Airport is a really nice airport, I can tell you that. Have fun!

I started that thread in November 2010. It is up to date.

The first two are taken form the Crowne Plaza Hotel. You have to pay, and ask for a runway view, normally a few photographers go together to share the cost.

The only place you can take photos from the airport are the Crown Plaza and T1 Viewing Gallery. In T1 there is one un-tinted panel of glass which is good for photography. But from T1 there are mainly only small A320 sized aircraft and the occasional heavy. Spotting there will have limited activity and low variety. T2 and T3 have two highly tinted green glass so it is impossible to get a shot with sufficient quality to meet A.net standards.
If you can do without the nicer backgrounds, you can get more shots and more aircraft if you shoot from Changi Business Park or Changi Beach. I just came back from Singapore and spent most of my spotting days under a tree in Changi Business Park snapping shots of everything from small air force fokker's to SQ A380's. You might get lucky with a clear blue sky or some interesting clouds.
