Hello all,

Me and my car will be in Zagreb, Croatia on 18 June, with a week to spare to get to my home in Holland. What I want to do is make an aviation photography road trip westward through the Alps. I'm pretty much a carnivore: airliners, military aircraft, general aviation (though not the very light stuff), airshows, heliports, museums, and preserved aircraft sites are all of interest to me.

On 18-19 June there is supposedly an airshow at Varazdin, Croatia, and on 25-26 June there are three in northeastern France, at Etain-Rouvres, Epernay-Plivot and Metz-Frescaty. My first question is whether anybody has information about these, since they all don't seem to run websites.

And then the second question is what the nicest, scenic, photographer friendly and active airports and airfields in the Alps region are in summer, and what might be the best route, hopefully scenic itself and dotted with some additional heliports and preserved aircraft. What are the best airports in the region for Alpine scenery and traffic in summer? Bolzano, Innsbruck, or should I go to Salzburg? Any others?

Sion in Switzerland has F-5 Tiger activity in this week. Would that be a recommended stop? Is Sion as good for photography as other Swiss airbases? I read it has high fences.

Route might be: Varazdin - Ljubljana - Klagenfurt - Fresach heliport - Lienz - either Bolzano or Innsbruck - Samedan - Sion and then north towards Bern - Basle/Mulhouse. It's hardly littered with airfelds, Bolzano and the roads are quite minor although probably scenic. Are there better alternatives?

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Peter

Hey Peter,

first of all I gotta say what a shame, you're one week short for the Air Power 2011 at Zeltweg in Austria, one of the Top 5 airshows in Europe this year (imo).

That said, the described route is a rather poor one when it comes to aviation photography in the summer. Of course there are airports like Klagenfurt, Innsbruck, Samedan and Bolzano which have superb backdrops but sadly not much traffic during the summer. Salzburg is always worth a visit, if only for Hangar 7, where Red Bull stores its very nice aircraft.

There's also an airshow at Dübendorf in Switzerland on the 25th, if you're interested...

Apart from that, there's not much I can spontaneously think of.

If it comes to scenic drives though, you've most definitely picked one of the nicest routes around; I can only warmly recommend the Grossglockener Hochalpenstrasse, one of the very nicest alpine roads!

I'll do a rather similar trip in that region only a week later; if I come up with something else, I'll post it here.

Cheers,

Thierry

Hey Thierry, thanks for replying.

Yes, Zeltweg's timing is a pity, and I was a bit disappointed when searching for airfields in Tirol and around. A relatively quick transit to Switzerland may be the best thing to do. But as a lowlander I'll enjoy taking the high road, and I'm glad to hear the route is so good for scenery. The Grossglockener Hochalpenstrasse I gather is the #107 road? I could easily fit that in, thank you.

The Dübendorf event centres on flak guns I think. Although there's also a museum of course.
