How is ZRH for spotting without a car at all? I have a very good friend who now lives in Zurich so when I visit him I could borrow his bicycle and get the train to the airport then cycle to the good spots.

Spotting in ZRH with a car isn't a problem. Almost every spot is reachable by car and you don't have to walk. (Like stated above: approach rwy 14/16, heligrill, approach rwy 28, the parking lots, etc). And if you bring a ladder, you have no problems at all...
@AndyS: Spotting without a car isn't that interesting... It is possible, but it isn't that great. You have to walk pretty far distances (depending on the spot). But check this link for detailed information anyway http://www.planepics.org/en/spot_zrh.html
