How About A 300mm Prime Lens?

Hi all,
I currently have a Sigma 100-300/4, and I'm thinking if I should have a 300mm lens, like Nikon's 300/4D. The 300mm prime lens is good no doubt, but the fixed focal length means I can't take whole fuselage shots easily. Hesitating about that.

Jimmy.

What don't you like about your 100-300? As a general rule, a prime is going to offer superior image quality in theory - whether this will translate into an improvement of your images to justify the cost is an entirely different matter!

While I tend to advocate buying the best glass you can afford, this might not be the solution to a particular problem which may be related to technique or the camera (eg. issues with noise).

Cheers,

Colin

Amen. Of course it can be too long sometimes, even more so if you insist on side-on pictures.

You should consider renting one first to see if it'll work for you.

I would have little use for a 300 mm prime.
Depending on the circumstances, it would either be too long or not long enough.

I have 70-200 and 500mm (sold my 300mm f4 to help pay for the 500) - guess what focal length I miss the most

I have held off on replacing the 300 as the plan was to get whatever Canon replaced the 100-400 with. Sadly that has taken much longer than expected, and the price looks like it may be a bit rich!

Fortunately the 70-200 f4 IS works very nicely with the 1.4x convertor, and I can live with the loss of a stop. The old 100-400 is not an option as I know it doesn't match up to either the 70-200 (with or without the 1.4) or 500 so I see no sense in taking a step backward.

Cheers,

Colin
