Hello Guys!

I don't know how many of you know about the Lufthansa facebook page's photo contest, where the main prize is an intercontinental return flight.

Well, I've decided to partecipate... but this is not the point...

In fact, I had a look to the other picture in the "contest"... when I suddenly ended up in a familiar picture...
https://facebook.lufthansa.com/photo/4e50c3cb23be630ff9067a6d?sid=None&sort_on=created#

It looks like that the A.net watermark and references to the photographer, our Ronald Stella have been removed from this one...

I've just contacted Ron to tell him about this fact, as it looks his picture to me, although a bit and bad manipulated.

Well, I think that like this guy, there may be several other stealers, that pick pictures from here and pass them as of their own...

So... if you have any LH picture, I'd invite you to check here...
https://apps.facebook.com/spottheplane/gallery

I hope that you can manage to see them also if you don't have a Facebook account!

Hoping to have done something good for you,

Matteo Stella

Here is my best picture of a LH airplane, that I've just put in the queue...
Hope you'll like it!

There are definitely more pictures that have been taken from airliners.net and that are used without the permission o the photographers. The current #3 with 800 views for example is a picture taken in Beijing. The contributor in the Lufthansa competition claims that it was taken in Rio...

I'm aware of this... Just wanted to try...

Indeed, my picture is not a milestone one...
If I had a pic like the Ron's one, I would have kept tightly....

Anyway, it was just to advise that some of the pictures over here might have been stolen for this purpose...

Matteo, nice catch. The Stella aviation family has to stick together, thanks for letting me know!

This is quite sad. I'm not sure what is more appalling, the fact that he cropped out the Anet Watermark and inserted his own watermark, or that he couldn't even think of a better photo description, he simply copied that too.

Ron, it shows how great a photographer you are to get all your pics stolen and being claimed by others!

But it is really sad to see people doing this sort of thing, claiming something that is obviously not theirs.

I contacted the Lufthansa social media team and they offered to delete all pictures that were taken from a.net as soon as possible. So if you see any photos that look suspicious please let me know or contact the Lufthansa people who are responsible for the competition: socialmediateam@dlh.de

Totally agree with your statements... indeed, only great pics are subjected to this kind of things.

On the other hand, it's frustrating too, and I can't see the point for acting like this... I mean, what kind of satisfaction would this people get? Passing other's picture for their own?
As a photographer, I'm really satisfied when I take good pics, but I can't feel the same passing a picture taken by another photographer for mine.
Ok, maybe it could appeal to others, but I wouldn't feel ok with my conscience, apart from the risks I could end up into for breaking copyright...

Quoting Dehowie (Reply 6):
If Facebook are helping Copyright issues inform their IP department they will shut it down real fast..normally less than 4 hours.

And this is not a problem of Facebook only, but it's more "wider", because could be extended to all social media.
While social media could be done for some things, they've their downsides, too... and this kind of "incidents" are among them.

That's the whole point and I'm sure a lot of us will feel the same way. Though I guess people who steal photos like that are just in it to try and win the trips etc and there's no other reason for it. They obviously don't care.

This is my thought too...

But they're kinda fools... they risk a lot doing this way.

Copyright is almost everywhere (but I suppose everywhere) law protected.
Risking to be charged by the author of the picture (because I suppose that in cases like this one, the real photographer has all the rights to do it...) in return of a chance to win a trip?

I think it might be compared to go spotting where you know it's forbidden... very appealing sometimes (because most of the times they're places like military airfields or somewhere with interesting birds), but risky as well.
Worth the risk?
Actually, I think it isn't!

LOL, if one of those photos was mine, I'd just sit back quietly and wait and see if the "stolen" image wins the contest.

THEN....

Let Lufthansa know that they've broken your copyright. LIkely you'd get the free flight just to keep you happy, and as you were not the one to send in the image, you'd still own the copyright. Best of both worlds. Sure would be interesting to see how Lufthansa would handle such a situation. They'd do almost anything to avoid bad PR I would think.

Besides the LH page, there are numerous fan pages out there (a fake airbus.com, 747 and others) where people pluck our photos off of here, remove the copyright bar and upload them on these pages. I started a thread about the airbus one a few months back, contacted over a dozen photographers, I think one guy managed to have his photo removed and all the others managed to stay up. I'm guessing the photographers don't care as it's just a facebook page. Problem is the guy was removing the copyright bar and putting his own fake airbus.com bar at the bottom.

And our beloved site makes it easy for this to happen. All you need to do is buy a first class membership and the image is free of any (difficult to remove) type of copyright mark that might prevent someone from doing this. Our own site, the one that we upload to does this...

And the winner is...

Just have a look at these pictures, was pretty obvious right from the beginning that 'average' photos like Ron's wouldn't have a chance with these competitors...

Really wonder what Lufthansa's PR department will do with the photos.

Of course, no offense to the photographers...

My guess is that LH's PR department really doesn't care which image won. They gained the rights to all images that were submitted and can pick the most useful to them for promotional purposes.

True point! On the other hand they won't be able to do much with the small files that were submitted.
