I am really close to buying a nikon d3100 with the 18-55 mm lens kit (will upgrade to 55-200/300 later) and I was just wondering what are some must have accessories for this camera. Help is much appreciated.

My advice is to forget the 55-200/300 and go straight for the Tamron 70-300 vc usd lens. You will not regret it. It's sharper throughout the focal range and I mean all the way to 300mm. It's also very reasonable and can work on FX bodies as well. So if later on you decide to go semi pro or pro, you won't be hunting for another lens. Also don't get caught up in the brand game. Third party lenses are often just as good or better optically for less money.

When I had my d3100 I bought a second battery and was about to purchase a battery grip before I upgraded to the d7000. The d3100 is a small body so a battery grip can really help if you have big hands. A monopod or tripod for low shutter/ light shots isn't a bad idea although I have yet to purchase one myself   This is all assuming you already have a decent camera bag (I like Case Logic, they are tough). Any other accessories you need will depend on your photography preferences. A good fast flash for low light shots isn't a bad idea. The sb 600 seems to the favorite in terms of price and versatility. You should also pick up a cleaning kit and a big dust blower like the Giottos Rocket Air to help with sensor dust. These are just some of the things that come to mind.

Nikon D7000 / Tamron SP 70-300 f4-5.6 VC USD / Tamron SP AF 28-75 f2.8 / Nikkor 35 f1.8G / Nikkor 50 f1.8D / Bower grip
