I am going to have a 3 and a half hour layover in MIA next month, and was wondering if there are any good places within the terminal to take pictures? Looking at flightaware for the time of day I'll be there, roughly 1300--1630, there looks to be some interesting traffic ( at least stuff that I haven't seen before) and I'd love to snap a few shots, as it will have been a while for me. Any info is greatly appreciated!

I haven't been in the MIA terminal for years but I can pretty much guarantee you will be taking into the sun from the terminal if you are trying to get most of the interesting traffic. If the winds are from the East, which they are 75% of the time - The European traffic land on 9 (which is south of the terminal complex) and 12 (which is west/southwest of the complex - between 1-4 pm, obviously that is looking into the sun.
Most Carribean/Central/South American stuff lands on 9 as well as the international cargo such as LAN Cargo, Centurion, Korean Cargo etc.
Looking north you have runways 8L and 8R. Most of the aircraft that land on 8L are American, American Eagle, Fed Ex, UPS or anything else that would use the north ramp and general aviation/biz jets.
90% of the departures however use 8R - so most of the European flights take off on 8R, but you said you were leaving around 4pm, which is before most of the European stuff starts departing. There would be a lot of other flights departing around then though. I am sure you can get a view of 8R out of the American Airlines terminal complex.

Thank you very much for the reply. Thats a bummer about the timing of the European departures, definitely the kind of stuff I would have been interested in. I'll give the traffic on 8R a chance though, maybe something interesting will drop by

Just do a flightaware search daily on departures during those times. Pretty much most departures use 8R. The foreign cargo stuff uses 9 to depart. When I was there it seemed like 1 out of 10 flights used 12 for departures. Other than that most traffic departed on 8R.
If the winds are westerly - I am not sure how the operations would be. I haven't been there for the westerlies - European arrivals might use 26L (which is opposite 8L). The LH A380 I think only can use 9/27 for arrivals due to taxiway widths. I think for most part - could be wrong that westerlies arrivals are 26R and 30, while departures are 26L and 27. Most European flights departures would probably use 27 - which would be in the sun from the terminal.
I'm trying to get out there on my days off when the weather gets better there - but there are a couple great spotting locations right next to the runways too.
