Hey Guys,
I am looking at buying my first dslr for taking photos of aircraft while
travelling, either from inside the terminal or aircraft window shots. Also
may go spotting at Brisbane Airport from time to time. Just wondering if
you can give an idea to which brand camera, type of lens and best entry level dslr I
should look at? My budget is around $1000AUD-(650GBP)

I was searching for my first DSLR until a few weeks ago--then I bought a Nikon D3000. I love it so far! With a Nikkor 55-300 lens, it costed me about $800 USD.

If you look to start up a hobby any starter dslr will do for you just like viv already pointed out.
To give my own personal opinion: Buy a Canon EOS 1000D or 1100D and get a lens with large zoom, like the Tamron 18-270mm. I know there's a lot of fuzz about the 18-270 but I have been using it for 2 years now and I still enjoy it. (Altough I've grown to 100-400mm L and 10-22mm lenses.) But still for travel photography there's nothing better than a lens with large zoom so you don't have to walk around with a lens bag in the beginning. It's good to get a feel of the lenses and mm's when you're having one lens.
