Hi there!
Since a few months now I can immagine strange ratings on some of my photos!
Let me say that of course I like it when someone rates my pictures well and the best is a nice comment of course! But I recognized that sometimes it is a little bit strange, well, let me say unfair!
What happened: The first days a pictures were rated very good with 5 stars but a few days later only with 1 or 2 stars. I can recognize this on a few of my pictures!
I recognized it especialy on one photo which was first rated 5.0 with some hits. A few days later it was "downrated" to 4.4 with only a few hits. So this hits must be 2 stars or below! After a few weeks now the same picture was again "downrated" again with only 3 more hits below 4.0 now.
Now the funniest thing: At the same time I recieved nice-comments for this photo!
It´s happy hour! You recieve two landings for the price of one!

Hello Jan.
I have noticed this pattern too - I had a couple of photos rated well over 4 with a couple of hundred ratings, but within a short space of time they dropped below the 4.3 score which gets photos into the 'Top rated' section. Given how many ratings they already had, there must have been quite a few very low ratings given to drag the overall average down so significantly.
The reality is the system is open to 'abuse' in that people can club together to rate each other's shots highly, or alternately people may take offence at something you have said in a thread, or some such, and 'punish' you by rating some of your photos with a '1' just to stick the boot in!
I used to pay this more attention, but now I only really look at comments left for my photos and also the photo albums people choose to include your photos in. For me this is a good measure of the popularity of a photo. In fact, I would like to see this as a feature that you can see via Photographer's Corner.

Alright, this is going to be embarrassing, but how do you even see what a photo is rated? I must be totally blind to have missed this is all my years on the site. I know you can rate a photo when you comment on it, but I guess I've been dense when it comes to seeing the results.

I know some people give photos low ratings when the photo has a watermark.

to that whole paragraph.
One of my desires is to be able to leave comments WITHOUT rating a photo. I'm not really interested in rating them, but do want to leave comments every now and then!

Paul, I agree with you 100%. I'm not going to even bother to speculate as to the why, but I do know for sure that many photos of mine are rated down after a few months, and they no longer appear in the Top Rated section. This has been talked about many times. O'well, I'm not going to let it bother me, I can only keep at it, hoping to improve!
Nice shot Johnny! Next election I'll rate it 5 stars (only kidding guys lol)

Rated yesterday with 15 hits and an average of 4.2! Today 17 hits now and 3.88. So the last two hits must be a one and a two-star!
Well I know it is posible to disallow comments and ratings and this behaviour is leading me to think about to do this!
I know an other photo-database has the same problem at the moment and they disabled this funktion at the moment.

So you think an Airliners.net watermark makes a pic less rated. What if it's in a part of the picture (lets say completely down) where no part of any plane is showed. Would it then be rated lower?
Afterall if somebody wants a copy of the picture they email the photographer so..

I don't think anyone in this thread has said that he or she feels that way.
Point is, some people do apparently rate photos lower when they have watermarks.
Doesn't matter to me - I'll continue to watermark my photos.

Well, this is what happens when you have a rating system that can punish photos. I think a like or favorite button is a better way to go, like at other sites.

Quoting Soaring1972 (Reply 16): And rating a picture less because of a watermark is very stupid in my eyes!!!
That's easy for us to say because we are photographers. The majority of the viewers, I suspect, are not photographers. Watermarks ruin their viewing experience and that's all they care about. If they aren't photographers, they don't understand or care about the photogs need to protect their work because that doesn't affect them. Plus, I'd guess it's the young kids, 13-15 years old resorting to the childish response of voting down.

Not sure what you're saying...

Very true. It's unfortunate that so many people are willing to steal photos, thereby "ruining" the experience for others (I put "ruining" in quotes, because I see watermarked photos all the time, and it doesn't bother me).
