200 Vs 300mm Nikon Lense Dilemma-which To Buy?

Hello all,

I’m having a serious dilemma about which Lense length to purchase. No issues with the quality of the lenses... will get
as much as the budget allows ($750) . Based on my YEG location, most of the frequent spotting would involve western Canada & US destinations (YEG,YYC,YVR,YLW,SEA.DEN,LAS,PHX,SFO,LAX). Based on your experiences with
the described spotting locations, any thoughts on which lense might be more suitable?

Jack

P.S. using a Nikon d40 per forum info I’ve gleaned (good lense, basic body learn technique then think about upgrading the body)

Just go for the 70-300mm VR. Its a great lens for the money; I got mine for a little over 300 used on Ebay. Do this and you can spend the extra money on a body or your trips.

Just stop it down to f8 and fire away.

Good Luck!

I second that opinion, the 70-300VR is an excellent midrange lens that will last you years. You would quickly tire of only being able to zoom to 200mm doing this kind of photography.

NWA330nut/megatop412,

Thank you both for validating what I had suspected ... I ended up purchasing the 70-300vr lense. Bigger is definitely better in this case? =)

My initial photos with the "new to me" d40 & this lense show a significant improvement in PQ over my previous long zoom P and S... however there is a definite need for lot's more practice (and manual/book reading) required to master a proper technique which will, hopefully, result in some suitable pictures (not necessarily a-net quality but good enough for me).

Jack

If you are just wanting suitable pictures, this lens and body combo will do just fine. I used this exact combo on Sunday at JFK and despite the cloudy conditions it gave me some great shots:
