Hello guys could anyone tell me what runways might be in use in early morning hours from 6am-12pm at heathrow? Usually? And also what aircraft might be intereting to see that time of day? I have a couple of hours layover next Monday. Thanks

Depends on the wind and Runway rotation, the majority of the time they use the 27's and rotate each day at 3pm. So if they land on 27L in the morning, they change at 3pm and land on 27R in the afternoon.

It's different on the 09's. If the 09's are in use they will land on 09L and depart off 09R for the majority of the day.

As for traffic, plenty of BA heavies and shuttles, numerous arrivals from across the pond and the middle east. It's constantly busy, the link below gives all the info you need

The current wind forecasts for Monday 16th April (I assume you're referring to that Monday?) suggest a northerly wind with perhaps a slight easterly slant, so that'll likely result in the 09s being in use. This means that 95% of traffic will arrive on 09L the whole day (no runway switch); the only stuff using 09R being some T4-bound (mainly Skyteam) aircraft and possibly the A380s.

If the wind forecast changes they are due to be arriving 27L until 15:00 that day.

Ok guys thank you this helps i am hoping the 09s will be used because it looks easier to get to on foot from T5. Plus i think the sun should be in my favor if they are using 09. I am rally looking forward to this i spot at Cleveland Hopkins and never really get out to other airports. Can't wait. Thanks for the info.

Doubt you'll see me as I'm actually from the north of England and tend to only visit LHR in the winter months. I have however been as regular as some of the regulars so far this year!

You're right by the way - 09 arrivals will suit you better for the light in the morning. It's no great disaster if the 27s are in use though as it's not difficult to get from T5 to Hatton Cross.

Unfortunately the traffic between 06:00 and 12:00 isn't as exciting as it is after lunch, unless a couple of the Asian/Australasian flights are running a touch late first thing. Still, if you're used to Cleveland and not a lot else much of the 'mundane' traffic will certainly appeal to you. LHR is phenomenally busy so you should enjoy it!

Hi szucsbela,

There is a mound near a slip road (used by taxi's waiting for customers and people arriving to pick up family and friends) at T5, it gives a very good view of arriving aircraft landing on runway 09L, with really only one lamp post in the way.

On exiting customs you enter the arrivals area, turn right and head for an exit outside. Follow the footpath, you will pass a bicycle stand with a roof on your left (as is a Sofitel Hotel) and the apron fence on your right. Follow the footpath as best you can, in the distance is the start of the taxi rank, overhead will be the Heathrow pod shuttle service on an overhead monorail of sorts, they're small and carry a few people out to the long term car park. Pass the taxi rank and head down the footpath, the slip road will be on your left and the mound will be dead ahead. I have had absolutely no problem with the police while spotting there, you may see other spotters as well, hope the weather co-operates.

Cheers CK

Sorry szucsbela, I hope this clarifies,

If you are standing on the mound you will have T5 on your rightside and 09L on your left of course. If they are landing on 09L you will hear them in the distance, before you see them. Just follow the jet noise!

Now if aircraft are taking off on 27L, then I have yet to follow that path out of T5, but there is a petrol station/garage that you can take photo's from which is described on planemad.com that is about 20 minutes walk I believe from T5.

CK's descriptions are accurate enough (except that if T5 is on your right side runway 09L is ahead of you, not to the left), however both these spots will suffer from heat haze if the sun's out. Some people don't mind this but let me tell you that LHR's runways are very good at kicking up some serious heat haze on warm days!
