I'm off to Milan in a few days time, Due to an admin error on my part I will end up in Milan a day before my fellow photographers do.
In the hunt for locations I wrote to a few 'malpensa based' photographers, but sadly, not a sinlge one has come back to me, so I throw the question out to the hundreds................He He
I found this and wondered if its upto date, it says point 1 has a net in the way, I really do fancy getting a few early morning shots as the sunrised on the alps in the background etc, I will have a car so fully mobile.
Any advise on Locations would be great, Also Night shots........? It looks like the CargoLux italia 747 is a difficult one to get during the day, so may take my tripod and try for some nightshots...........Again, any help would be great.

A little foreword: I'll write you about places only since I don't know what the schedules exactely are... so I cannot help you about this.

This is the Milan Malpensa web-site... you could search for arr/deps in short term period, something like present day + next 4 days.
If you are interest in a specific flight, there is also the seasonal flight schedule that is available.
Let's come now to our business...
Having a car in MXP is very useful. The spot you liked, for example, is reachable with car only, unless you want to walk a lot! LOL
Morning:
The most interesting point is the one that you linked. If you're luck, you can have the chance of getting the Alps in the background... but they're not always visible. The sky must be very clear and there shouldn't be too much humidity in the air.
The point on the map is 1/2... you can reach 3 and 4 by a path that surrounds all the fence, thus letting you get closer to the aircraft.
1 and 2: you can choose several angles and positions, and using the aids you'll find there (mounds and similar) you can also get above the fence.

There are a plenty of positions you could use over there.
In my opinion these are the best ones for the morning, especially if there is traffic arriving. For departures heat haze is a real pain in the neck from there... so I suggest you to go there when arrivals in the morning are from 35R.
point 5: never used, but it is a bridge over the railway... you should get the aircraft a little more "angled" than the previous ones.
Alternatively, you can go at point 6 or 9.
passing the bridge of point 5, you'll reach a "T" intersection: point 6 is reachable by turning left and proceeding on... the zone is approximately nearby the local graveyard.
by turning right at the intersection of above, you'll go towards 35's theresolds.
#9 is a way easier if you're not familiar with the area... since also the zone of point 11 is quite hard to reach...
for #9 you can leave the car wherever it doesn't make any danger for the circulation or wherever it isn't an impediment (for example, never leave it near emergency exit gates... I mean, you can park there, but you must reamain near your car...)
"9" zone is perfect for morning and afternoon, you have just to position yourself in the correct position...
from there, it is possilbe to take side shots only, also because taxyway H will be closed until mid-July.

Theresold 35L:
You will notice some space out of the main concrete road where you can leave the car. You won't get so far from the latter... but it's better for you to close it, since sometimes landing traffic on 35R leave at EM (or also landing traffic on 35L)
But please, don't rely too much on the fact that many airplanes leave runways at E's, since most of them vacate at the previous exit (D)
You'll have to shoot through the fence and you'll have to be quick, since there are many nearby obstacles.
The terminal is a good place to spot too: two little "terraces" (park spaces... LOL) that you can use to take pictures... I suggest you the northern one.
The inside is good to take pictures, although windows are usually dirty and of a colour that will drive you crazy when coping with in PS.

Also for night shot is ok, but take care that there will be a lot of reflections, so it's better for you to use everything you have to keep them out!
Alternatively, when the sun goes down you can go back at point 1 or 2.
I spotted there with arrivals only, but I think something could be done with deps.

Bring a book with you. MXP is one of the slowest and boring airports in Europe. I was there for 3 days last year and on the third day I've decided to drive 4 hours to Zurich to do quality spotting.
On the first day at MXP you will get all the stuff that you need and on the second day you'll be bored to death. EasyJet after EasyJet.
Don't get me wrong, I am happy with some stuff that I've got there, but if you search for the pictures in the database you will see that 'interesting' airplanes were shot over period of time.
For the spot with Delta 767 you will need a ladder or you will have to climb monkey bars in the playground. Its right next to a church. You will need a car to get there. The other location where I went was close to the runway lights. I've parked on the side of the road (semi-paved pull over area) and I was shooting from there.
But from there you have to be alert constantly. You will see planes in the last moment right after they emerge from the trees.
I didn't go to the other side of the airport (they were landing on 35R/L when I was there).
Also keep in mind that during weekends everything is closed in the vicinity of the airport after 3pm. To get some food we had to go to the airport and buy it from the shops in the terminal.
We've stayed at the Sheraton hotel across from the terminal. Pretty decent hotel but bit expensive. The only good thing about it is walking distance to the terminal.

Well... actually a ladder is not so mandatory!
There is a small mound, esay and safe to climb, that allows you up, over the fence.
Other possible stuff are wooden structures nearby the playgroud (that look like a table or something), slide (if there are no childern nearby, of course!). I don't use those "monkey bars" since I feel pretty unsafe over there... given that I don't have the agility of a gymnast, I think this is the right choice! LOL

Well, I wouldn't define it boring... I mean, if you go there for 3 days in a row, I may agree with you but if you are planning to spend some hours, or also a full day only, I think it isn't that bad.
Apart from all the EZY traffic (MXP is a hub for this company), there are several interesting "narrows", along with heavies:
EK has 3 daily flights (early morning mid afternoon and night arrivals)
CX has a daily (early morning arrival and departure around 1/2 PM)
TAM has a daily
DL has a daily to JFK and ATL (even if the latter is not daily)... they all arrive early in the morning and leave at around 10/11AM, together with AA (5 per week) and Continental (6 per week).
BIman flies with 777 Friday only and PIA arrives with 777 on tuesday and friday: both of them in mid-late afternoon.
SQ is also present with 777s in the morning
Then, we have Qatar, Korean, ethiad, Air china (with at least one daily)
Then Thai, Oman Air and Sri Lankan with a 3x week.
It all depends on the day you are going there...
Alitalia heavies are not so present as in Rome, but: there are flights to JFK that leave at around midday (A330) or flights oming in from Tokyo (777 generally) that arrive in mid-late afternoon.
Then, if you come on a good day, there will be a lot of cargo activity too...
Cargolux, Saudi Arabian Cargo, Fed-Ex (leaves at around 5PM), korean cargo and some others that come occasionally.
Obectively, it's not at the levels of the CDG (the only major airport I have experience with), but I think that, for one day, it could worth a visit.
Anyway, there is also a good museum "volandia", that is reachable from T1.

Thanks for the indept overview of Milan Matteo,
I'm actually there for the 'Clipper' weekend, but I arrive on an Easyjet flight around 9am Thursday, so have the day to myself before my friends arrive on Friday Morning. When I pick them up, we might got to Linate. We are in search of the Retro Alitatia as well as the 'blue/silver' special.
If the weather is bad, we are already looking at the drive to Zurich.

Linate... well, I cannot exactely tell you "go there and spend a full day".
I have never done it and I think I won't do it in future! LOL
I mean, great airport, great spotting points (some of which let you stay something like 50/ max. 100 meters apart from the taxiing traffic)... the downside is that the traffic is very boring and monotonous: only narrow-bodies and most of them are Alitalia's. Then, mainly some LH, AF, KLM and a couple of other carriers. So, not so much variety. The only variety is given by the business traffic.
But, indeed, it is good for a couple of hours or something, but not to spend an entire day...

I was there as well as Staff (the lowest of the four )
That was the last clipper for this year and i hope that you have enjoyed it. We hope that the ENAC decision will be rewieved in time for next spotting days ...
