Hi

I am going to IST in December and would like to know about any photo spots round the perimeter. I have heard of the flyinn but that will only be good from about 1330 I think. I have seen landing shots taken on runway 23 and 05 and I think this runway has recently been lengthened looking at work going on at one end on older google earth images. How much lands on this runway and how much on 35L 17R? Also it looks like 35R 17L is closed because I see no images in the database. Any info about where to go and when would be very helpful. Is hiring a car a good idea?

cheers
Gav

Correct, FlyInn is only good after noon. While I was there almost all planes used 36. There is a park at the end of that runway which can be used for spotting all day. Hiring a car is not the smartest idea. Even if you are used to driving on the right side of the road it is still very hard to drive in Istanbul as there don't seem to be any traffic regulations.
To get to the FlyInn and the park you can simply take a train from the main station to Yeşilköy and either walk from there or take a cab.

Ive been and can reccommend the flyINN as others have said. Hiring a car if your sighteeing as well as spotting is a big no-no! Its not practicle and everything is in walking distance. Overall i cant recommend getting one. If you require help getting there by public transport, i will be of happy assistance.

There are regulations, just not followed apparantly.

I remember last year I took public transport to Sabiha Gökcen Airport (SAW) and we were in a traffic jam, everybody seems to take all lines and (even white barred zones) without any issue.. Order in that chaos is needed there.

Taxi drivers do not stop for you, they honk and slow down but never stop. :p

In the seaside park at the end of Rwy 36, aircraft photography isn't always tolerated by security, and I didn't feel comfortable standing in the open along the road outside the park (Halkali Cd).

The area is a bit of a walk from Yeşilköy railway station (which is across the road from the aviation museum). There is also a bus to the Flyinn from Yenibosna metro station/bus depot, but the train is easier to use.

Personally i would recommend florya station for the train, its a safer walk to the flyINN IMHO.

Thanks for all the responses. Seems like a hire car isn't necessary but would it perhaps provide some cover from the security? My mate would be driving and he has driven a few times in Antalya so he is used to it.

There are some recent pics of stuff landing on 23 and 05 so looks like they had a runway extension and are using it a bit more. Can you get to the morning side of runway 35L at the seaside park?

cheers

I rented a car while at IST and that was big mistake. Taxis are sooooo cheap. Stayed at nearby hotel. Taxi from there to fly inn was about 15 lira. Also, if you rent a car and park at fly inn, remember to pay for the parking inside of the mall. We didn't know that and pissed off about 30 people behind us who were trying to exit parking lot. Finally police officer came over, he didn't speak English and we didn't speak Turkish. He called somebody in the mall and showed us on fingers how much we owe for the parking (something about 10 lira). We gave him the money, he called back to the mall and they open the gate for us.
A lot of mad Turks were right behind us. It took about 5 minutes to exit

Very true, don't believe all the reviews you find. Taxis are a great way around Istanbul and in general Turkey.
