Spotting At LAX

When spotting at the In & Out Burger for Runway 24R, where is the sun at for this time of year around 12 noon? Basically, if I am there this Thursday September 20th at 12:00pm, would all my pictures be looking into the sun? If it is, would I be better off going to Long Term Parking "Lot C" instead? If I remember correctly, pictures are only good at In & Out burger after about 3pm year round, is this correct?

At that time of day it would be best to be on south side of 24R. Getting late in the year for the sun to be good for In and Out shots.

No. That's true for the summer. In the winter, photos from the In'n'Out will be backlit, unless you walk to the south side of the approach like Andrew suggested.

It's doing a low pass on runway 24R at 11:10am at 500AGL.

Then it is doing a low pass on runway 25L at 11:50am followed by a full stop.

It's the same times as Thursday, just a day later now, supposedly.

I just didn't know if photos would be better from the South of the runways looking North or the opposite for this time of day.

Ahh, I had no idea it was doing all that! Do you have a link? Want to see where else in LA it's doing flyovers.

Since you'll be looking up at a considerable angle, the light won't be great from either side. But it'll be better on the south side looking north.

Check the regular queue. Apparently the final flyover and landing was the least significant part of Endeavours final journey.

Chris Heaton's shot is from NorCal. I've seen hundreds of shots online from aviation photographers, many of whom don't upload to Anet. There are some terrific angles with Downtown LA, Hollywood Sign, etc as a backdrop. Air quality and heat haze were pretty bad so that may be limiting acceptances, and I know several people who just haven't uploaded it yet but probably plan to do so in the future. I look forward to seeing more shots though. It was the most memorable flight I have ever witnessed at LAX.

Yes and don't forget all the shots from Houston, Plant 42 and Edwards AFB! There really is a lot of coverage of this event throughout the internet, even more so than the JFK arrival in April I'd say. Too bad there's not that much on a.net but I think we will see more in the future as people upload it.

Priority screening was cut short for Friday's portion of Endeavour's journey. I'm sure many shots, mine included, are sitting in the regular queue. I think John was pointing out that he was shocked to only see a couple of shots from Friday when the other days got so much immediate coverage.

Agreed with all above. I submitted a shot for priority Sat morning and was emailed that Endeavour was no longer eligible for priority screening. Shot is currently sitting in the queue but due to the terrible atmospheric conditions and my recent editing challenges will probably result in a rejection. My shots are from near Disneyland but just have blue sky background so nothing to really set them apart. Either way having seen it and photographing it even if not acceptable to A.net standards is something nice to have.


Oh, it's a big pretty white plane with red stripes, curtains in the windows and wheels and it looks like a big Tylenol.

For Winter -

The best public location is the Imperial Hill. Many times, it can provide nice artistic shots and
the further takeoffs are even with you.

At the Proud Bird, you can do approaches but they are not pro level quality because you see too much underneath
the plane.

Another suggestion for winter is to book at a hotel that faces north. There is one with a top terrace and if you stay there, you can get nice even-level shots with nice background of buildings etc.

One more is to pick some bridge and then get an artsy shot of the plane over the traffic. It is a neat shot but you will be chased out eventually so you have to do these quickly and get out of the way.


For summer -

The In n Out can provide you artistic shots with some sun. The pro level shots at In N Out would be those that are coming straight at you where you can see the pilots and those very wide angle shots of the plane flying over and you see the In n Out or people pointing to it. In other words, a ground reference is needed in order to make it pro level. Just the planes themselves are way too high and you are way too underneath. Pick something to show ground references.
Also at this location, sometimes vapor and vortex shots can be made with the inversion layer starts to settle from the west.

Also, going back and forth along the north end can get you nice landing and rotation shots in the afternoon light but you cannot stay in any location for long as you will be chased. You may want to "ride a bike" or "jog" back and forth but with a lighter camera and lens.

One other try is to shoot from a parking deck near the Ralphs market which will give you nice approaches looking north to south but again, you may be told to leave. It all depends on how lucky you can get.

If you write for a magazine or are a professional photographer, you can write to the airport to see if you can get special access to ride with ramp people. Some photographers do this and they do not even write for magazines or anything just use the photos for their personal gain. If you do something the chances get easier.

One last thing is you can hire those helicopters or private pilots who take people up in the air to do the famous "air to ground" shots that everyone is doing now. Sam Chui did not invent them (these were common with news helicopter and movie shots in the past) but he did make them popular on airliners.net as he was one of the first to do them for the net and he gave away the secret - so for a few dollars, you can get those dramatic air to ground shots that you see here which scores big ratings.

These are a few suggestions.

Good luck trying to do that! I am not sure who the people that have all kinds of ramp access at LAX know, but I have made phone calls, sent e-mails and never have had one response.

OK, not to be a dick, but what's with all the "pro level" stuff???

I'm terribly glad I ignored all that stuff when I started shooting. Otherwise, I would have come away with FAR fewer shots that I'm very happy with. And certainly some less unique ones.

There are people (my guess would be the majority on this site), who do this for fun, rather than a profession.

FYI, the one shot I've sold (I don't exactly go looking for sales opportunities) was one that you wouldn't consider "pro-level" by any means.

That all sounds way more confrontational than I mean it to sound, so sorry about that.

I wouldn't expect the people who have done ramp and next to runway photos at LAX to just go ahead and post in here who to contact and how to get this access. Then entire a.net would flood this contact with requests. Think about it, would you do it if you knew how and who?
