Hello all A.net photographers,
I've always been enthralled with aviation. Recently, I've been getting into aircraft spotting, including photography and videos. I've just began this, and so far I've just been using the camera I already had, which is a Panasonic Lumix with 16X zoom. It is pretty good for video because it takes 1080P HD video, but for pictures it is sub par. Unless super close, the image is often grainy and nowhere near standards for this site. So here's the question I have: What is a camera I can buy that won't break the bank but will provide me with quality pictures that, after editing in Photoshop, will be worthy of A.net. Also if someone could explain to me shudder speed and aperture settings that would be awesome. I'm fairly new to this so I can use all the help I can get!

Regards,
Alex

First of all, what is your budget? There are tonnes of second hand DSLRs on the market which are more than capable of taking A.Net quality shots. That's the first step - all other info shall come once you've given that some thought as there's too much to explain..

It's all about the destination AND the journey.

Just did some looking, the Sony Alpha A200K 10.2MP Digital SLR Camera with Super SteadyShot Image Stabilization with 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6 Lens looks good to me. Any thoughts??

Pretty much any dSLR, when used properly is capable of taking photos that are good enough quality for this site. Don't be purchasing equipment for the sole purpose of uploading here though. Enjoy the photography and aviation first, and uploading here second. Being a Canon shooter, I don't know much about the lens you mention, but 18-70mm may not be enough focal length (zoom) for your needs. The lens is more important than the camera body, so think about the distance you'll be from the aircraft where you'll be going. Unless you are really close to aircraft, a 70-300 is probably more what you'll need. The 18-70 will be good for day to day use of the camera and if you can get close to the aircraft.

I had this same lens, 18-70mm f/3.5-5.6, that came with my A350 Sony. It's a very poor lens, in my opinion. Poor reviews and never realized the difference a good lens makes until I upgraded to my 18-135. It cost me $500 cdn but worth every penny. My old lens gave me too many soft images. Lots of good images on airliners.net taken with older equipment, but do lots of research.
