The Thought Of Separating Ratings And Comments

Hi everyone,

I've been thinking about this for a little while. At the moment, you must rate a photo before commenting on a photo. Everyone knows how much of a joke the whole rating thing is.. Heck, my highest rated photo is a sky shot! I think the fact that you have to simply rate a photo before you can comment is a small discouraging factor when looking to comment. I kow that I'm deterred from leaving comments because of this - I don't like the fact that I have to rate a picture in order for me to make a comment. I know so many of us photographers completely ignore the ratings part but comments are nice to receive and I believe that separating the two would lead to more comments - the thing that would seem to matter more.

What do you think?

I've suggested this before, but no idea if any crew saw it or thought about it.

PLEASE do this. As Nicholas stated, I'm often deterred from making comments due to having to rate the photo.

"Two and a Half Men" was filmed in front of a live ostrich.

Maybe there is some reluctance from the crew to implement this as it is likely to mean that they will have to read and approve/reject more comments? Personally, I'm happy to read and approve/reject any comments people make on my photos. An automated system operates on Youtube.

That is for sure NOT the reason, not at all. We are open for suggestions and they are considered as well.

You can always make such suggestions in the Site Related forum and the developers read in there and Paul (PanAm_DC10) as well.

I think individual photographers should be able to make the decision on appropriate comments, of course moderators can help making that decision too if the photographer was not doing that.

I agree with the suggestion.

In addition, I think the system would work much better is comments weren't anonymous. Link them to ones profile and that could very well deter people from making bad comments thus eliminating the heavy dependence on comment screening.

Good idea Ryan, that would be quite nice to see too. And for those who aren't members of the site - a box they can fill in with a name.

I'm sure there are many other photographers with views on this - make yourself heard!

I agree with this as well, as long as there is still a way for non-members to comment (like, it could show up as "guest" or they could enter their name, as Nicholas suggested).

People with accounts in a.net should be able to make a comment without being necessary to rate a picture and also with that, finishing the anonymosity.
Those who don't have an account could also make comments as long as they leave an e-mail at least, having the choice to show it or not.

I thought the purpose of this thread was to make commenting easier and more frequent. A personal information barrier I think is the wrong direction. And even with this barrier, the need for a comment screener would still be there.

I thought the point was to separate comments from the rating system. I don't think the complaint is that it's too much work to rate a photo first, it's just something people don't want to have to do.

Even if the comments are put there sometimes anonymous, I sometimes get an e-mail from the person who left the comment.
