I am new at DSLR, but want to get the most bang for my buck. I will be buying off KEH because they have the best prices and their products come with a return policy and warranty. If I get a canon, I will get the standard kit lens 18-55mm lens with IS as well as the EF-S IS 55-250mm lens. If I go Nikon, I will get the kit 18-55mm VR as well as the Nikkor 55-300mm VR lens. The Canons I'm considering are the 30D and Rebel XSi. For Nikon, I'm considering the D3000. I know the 30D is highest quality, only concern is the megapixels. Thanks for all the help!

How can you be so sure about such a statement? Highest quality build, yes.. But what about in other terms of 'quality'? There are a few years between the 30D and the 450D. Technology changes very quickly.
Have you looked at ebay?
Any camera to start off with is a camera you can use. There is a negligible amount of difference between the brands. More or less, it could come down to the fact of whether you'd need the 300mm over the 250mm; though in saying that, both lenses might not be very good at the tele end of the spectrum.

When I said that, I meant build. Sorry. I am aware of the change in technology, but the major feature on the XSi, which is liveview, I don't view as necessary to me. If there is something I'm missing here, please inform me.

You will not go wrong with a Canon 40D which is a great camera. Good luck with whatever you choose. The Tamron 70-200 stabilised lens is also said to be very good if you can stretch that far with your budget.
Whatever you get just take plenty of pictures and not just of aeroplanes!

I have the 55-300 from Nikon. It's okay up to about 200mm, but falls off after that. I will be getting the 70-300 soon, which I've heard is far better than the 55-300.
