Hi,

I will be visiting Paris next June for the Paris Airshow and I plan on doing some spotting at CDG also .

I was wondering if a Photography permit is still required and if I would apply for this by email?

Thanks
Iain

The procedure has changed. You need to apply by post.

[CDG/LFPG] & [LBG/LFPB] New delivery of prefectoral pass dedicated to planespotters as from 01NOV12

As from 01NOV12, you will be supposed to show a new planespotter prefectoral pass delivered by French authorities during military or police patrol control around Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle & Le Bourget airports. This new pass will be nominative with a photography.

If you want to get your pass, you must send by post the following documents :

Copy of ID or passport
A passport photo
Your full name
Your full address

To this following French address :

Service du Préfet chargé des aéroports de Paris-Charles-de-Gaulle et du Bourget
A l'attention du Commandant de Police Xavier HUBY

SPDCARB B.P 18031
95722 ROISSY CDG CEDEX
FRANCE

You should count 3 to 4 weeks to receive the permission. You don't have to include a stamped envelope.
The permission expires 3 years after the issue date.
If you need any help feel free to contact me.
As for where to spot there is a nice .kmz with all the spotting spots in this forum

I still have an old permit, with no expiration date, so valid for a lifetime...   Does this mean I need to file for a new one as well?

Cheers!

From the 1st of November 2012 all old licences are no longer valid
So you must send the required documents to the police. A new permit will be sent to you in about 3-4 weeks by mail at the expenses of the French police

This new procedure was put in place in order to facilitate the life of the spotters and the police. Many lists with the names of permit holders, some up to date some not, were circulating among the Vigipirate patrols of the army and there where sometimes problems during the checks. With the new permit these problems should no longer exist. In fact since the new permit has a picture no need for to cross check the permit with an ID so everything should go faster

I must also say that police and spotters are cooperating in order to make the spotting experience around CDG better nevertheless spotting remains a "strange" hobby to many people involved in the managing of the CDG airport so please respect the signs, the parking zones and the fences of the airport

PS In case you are asked by a Vigipirate patrol, army patrols in Land Rover's, to leave the premishes and you are parked in parking zone and holding a valid NEW permit ask them politely to call the Gendarmes or the Police in order to verify it is OK to be there. Vigipirate's patrol change every 2-3 weeks and sometimes are not aware of the permit's existence. This type of incidents should be rare in the future but its good to know your rights beforehand

Cheers
