Photo Spots At Tokyo (HND & NRT)

Hi all,

Hope you guys (and girls) had a good Xmas.

I'm off to Japan on 20th December and although I've been before it was 13 years ago, so I expect things to have changed. I know of the two decks at HND but apparently there's a third, atop the new international terminal? I've also seen what appear to be very close taxiing/line-up shots recently and was wondering if this spot is accessible to the public? Mainly viewed on Facebook but I've found what I assume to be one taken from the same location here...

As for NRT, how many decks does this now have? Three I heard at last count? I've also seen the photos taken from the runway end(s), with the hotel in the background - is this spot any good back end of January and is it easy to find? Any other good photo spots outside the perimeter as we'll have a car?

Finally, I'm looking to take my 70-200 rather than my 100-400, to save on weight - will I really miss the larger lens or will 200mm have most eventualities covered?

Just a few things.. HND does indeed have three observation decks.. Narita has three as well (or two, if you count the two separate ones on Terminal 2 as one...

Out of my experience, I can say that I have images of B737's on HND's runways with around 260mm, even B747's taking off will need 200mm... You don't wanna miss the smaller stuff at HND so that would be a reason to take the 100-400... NRT is a different story.. On one hand, you have stuff on the Runway that needs the 100-400, and then you have stuff passing the decks which is much closer... I wouldn't leave the 70-200 behind.. it is not that heavy... It would be even better if you could loan a smaller lens from somebody to supplement your 100=400

Getting to all the spots in NRT is easy if you can find the courage to approach the taxi drivers... I have printed out the plans from the website I mentioned and have showed them to a taxi driver... It has always worked.

You will be amazed how easy and hassle-free spotting is in Japan... You will see battalions of other spotters and onlookers.. You won't be disappointed (..you might be lashed by rain though LOL)

I don't have room in my camera case for both the 70-200 and 100-400, and the weight difference between the two is noticeable after a full day on your feet! If I'm only going to miss the odd, distant movement I'm not too bothered as I'd rather carry the 70-200.

As for something smaller I forgot to mention that I will be taking my 24-105 - unless I need something wider?

We should have a car so asking taxi drivers may be out of the question. Perhaps we can ask at our hotel. That said, do we actually need a car? How are taxi prices for just a few miles?

Ah yes, I missed the info about the car... I suppose that car will be equipped with a SatNav so you should be able to get to all the perimeter spots... The 24-105 will be a useful addition when you are on the decks...

You may need a car for NRT to get around the spots on the perimeter. I would think it would be a headache without one but isn't car hire in Japan hideously expensive? This said, if you are only dodging around the perimeter, it shouldn't be too much hassle and worth the expense.

As for HND, no need for car hire as you jump on the monorail or shuttle bus between the Terminals. You will need to move anyhow during the day as the sun swings around. I haven't been to the International Terminal and Observation Deck but I would have thought that will be looking into the sun in the morning, so you will have to be on the JAL Terminal am.

Looks like we'll stick to the terraces at HND but I am very keen to explore the perimeter at NRT - this spot in particular...

By my reckoning this is an afternoon approach to runway 16R? I've heard that a step ladder is required at this spot - how large a ladder do I need?

just visited the spot last month - a step ladder is good but it's also possible without a ladder. You can stand on top of a crash barrier and shoot through the massive concrete posts. I would suggest to take some tape to protect your lenses.

...and yes - it's a 16R afternoon spot!
During our visit the wind was variable and they changed the runway 3 times - it was quite frustrating witout a car!

Karl - you need to shoot through the concrete posts in any case - but it is much easier in 2-2,5m height. The 70-200mm is badly needed at this position - the 100-400 is much too long there.

Jens,

did you rely on public transport when in Japan to get around? How easy was it?
This is the option I will likely use in October.

20th Jan MAN-AMS-NRT (arrive early morning 21st Jan)

We'll spend the first day on the terraces before moving after dark to our HND hotel. We are planning three full days at HND, before picking up our car on the evening of 24th for the drive to NRT. We then plan to spend the next four days at NRT before flying home late afternoon on 28th Jan.

We may drive to Nagoya but that depends on whether we hit most of our 'targets' in Tokyo.

I will be travelling with Gav Bowler and Nik and Ashley French.

Nice one. One issue at HND is that it will get repetitive depending on your standpoint. Three days should suffice.
