The Overlook it the place to go. I'm out there all the time, it's hard to beat the view - well, a little more variety might be nice, but it's a great spot to watch from.

When is the overlook closing for the new runway? And did I hear correctly that they'll be building a new one?
The public: They always know better, even though they often know nothing

From the news stories when they announced the new runway, environmental impact studies will be conducted this year, with construction expected to start in 2014. While it's not in any of the stories I found this morning, I do remember hearing when the announcement was made that the overview would be relocated. Where it will be located, and the timing of constructing a new overview (during or after runway work) wasn't made clear.

Out of CLT...
US mainline operates A319, A320, A321, A330, B734, B752, B762, E190
US Express operates CRJs of various sizes and shapes, E170/5 (Republic), Dash-8
AA brings an MD-80 and Eagle flies their usual RJs
LH operates an A330 in the winter and an A340 in the summer
DL flies a DC-9
United brings an A319 and United Express have a couple of RJs
B6 has a few E190s a day
FedEx and UPS both fly A300Fs
Jazz flies a CRJ
AirTran comes in with a B717
Insel Air brings a Mad Dog on Saturdays
The NC ANG fly C-130s
Roush Fenway Racing operate 2 B727s
Now, granted, you might not see all of that from the overview - some of them tend to use some of the other runways, but that's an idea of the type of traffic you will see around CLT.
