I just joined this site for my love of aviation. I live in NJ, and want to go planespotting in EWR. Could people give me some tips on where to spot, how to, and security info? Do I also need a certain kind of camera? I own an iPhone 4S and the Canon Powershot ELPH110. I am quite new to aviation though. Thanks for your help!
But be forewarned - security around EWR (especially local PD) is *very* aggressive about moving you along if you are spotting in the area. Most of the NYC area regulars don't bother with EWR unless there is something extraordinary arriving.
Spend a little time on NYCA, especially the forum - we're a friendly group, and always eager to help out a new spotter!

There are spots around EWR...all I will say is that go*gle maps is your friend, and you need to be very stealthy about it. I would pick a different airport, honestly, for all the trouble you'll find there.
As far as cameras to take decent aviation pictures with, an iphone won't cut it for anything except maybe static shots when you can get close enough. The Canon looks like it would be much better suited for the job. Use that for a while until you feel like there are things you want to do photographically that it can't handle- then you step into SLR's

Thank you everyone for your help! @moose135: I actually have visited that site a few times! It is good for spotting at JFK/LGA, but there is one spot for EWR. I have tried that spot, but I was busted in the 1st 10 seconds :| I will go on the site and spend some time there, thanks for the suggestion!!
@megatop412: Thanks for the camera info! I'm sure the Canon would work ok. Are SLR Camera's very expensive? I hope I can go to JFK/LGA...whatever is closer. Somebody else told me about P6 Lot at EWR, and it costs 28 bucks to get in. Do you think that is worthwhile? Thank you =D

SLR cameras range from relatively inexpensive(used entry-level bodies and lenses) to ridiculous. It is a very addictive hobby and can eat away at your savings very quickly. That said, most folks don't need to get a ton of lenses. 1 or 2 telephoto lenses is enough, along with a wide angle zoom and a normal zoom. But, definitely try some shots with the Canon first.
EWR is an enigma of the first degree. It draws some nice traffic, but you have to work at it. If you don't have a car, it's nearly impossible. The field is surrounded by industrial zoning, there are no In and Outs, no retail outlets where you are able to just 'hang out', no spots on the expressways that crisscross the area to pull over. Every time I drive down the NJ Tpke, I pass that midfield overpass that only the police can use and fantasize that one day, I will scoot up there, take a dozen amazing shots, then fly out of there like my life depends on it. But I know it will only ever be a fantasy.
Like I said, shots can be had, you just have to gauge your risk tolerance. In many cases, even when you get 'busted', you end up just having to leave. If that happens after you've been able to grab a few dozen shots, you've had a good day at Newark.

Thank you Megatop for the info! I will definitely try it out with the Canon, in a week or two, I will head over to EWR and try spotting there. I will go to the IKEA Parking Lot, and Frontage/Olympia Road near the airport! That is awkward if only a shot or two makes a good day at Newark. The security must be THAT bad!! JFK/LGA has nice security, according to others. I wish I could go there, but I live in Central New Jersey. From that experience at Ikea Parking Lot, I went upstairs in the cafe and got a great window seat. It was FANTASTIC looking at all the planes, ranging from Small Bombardiers, to a British Airways 777. Unfortunately, there was a lot of dirt and glare on the windows so it didn't make a good video. At least I was able to take some shots =P
