Uploading Military Planes With No N Numbers?

I wish to upload some photos of WWII planes. The numbers on the tails are not N registration numbers. What is the best way to fill in the upload forms for those fields? I have a B-17, B-25, and a P-51, none of which have FAA N numbers on the tail. Thanks for the help.

I've used it to find military regs when I've needed them. You can choose the USAAF from the dropdown menu.

Being a pedant, Military aircraft do not have registrations, they have serials and this is the best source of information on US Military ones. They are not always straightforward to get right!

If these are genuine WWII photographs, then you are not old enough to have taken them so in order to upload them, we will need to establish a strong connection to them, usually a familial connection, not simply bought.

If, on the other hand they are recent photographs of WWII aircraft then they will generally be classed as WARBIRDS here and if airworthy they will have an N number. This will be displayed on the aircraft, usually small and hidden under the tailplane. I suspect that a high proportion of these are already on this database and a search will find them and their details. The Help menus when uploading do actually help

Thank you! This is the info I was looking for. Two of the "Warbirds" flew at our airport, the other was taken at an airshow, so the N markings aren't visible. I will search for these Warbirds and try to find that info.

If these photos were taken recently, they probably do have N-number registrations. You're going to have to find the aircraft and get the tail numbers for them to be acceptable on this site. If you post the photos, we can identify them.

Thanks for the help and info. I have located the N numbers for these airplanes. This leaves me with another question though: We MUST have an N number for an aircraft to be acceptable to the site? For example, some transient aircraft passes through and I get an interesting photo of it, but have no idea of the N number or where they came from. I don't need to bother trying to get the photo accepted?

It seems to depend. I've had photos accepted without a full reg, but I've also had photos rejected for "info". Not sure where the line is drawn.

It's pretty rare that you can't see the registration at all on a civil aircraft, and since the database is essentially organized on information like registration and, to a lesser extent, cn/msn, so I'd say yeah. If you can get an interesting photograph, chances are good you can see the registration in your viewfinder and record it in your shot (or a second shot).

Almost all registrations, and certainly U.S. (N) registrations, can be found online if you know where to look. There is some information that occasionally isn't available anywhere, but N-numbers (US registrations) are public record. The only time you might not be able to get one is when a new-build aircraft hasn't been assigned a registration yet. In this situation, it has been my experience that it is okay to upload with partial information only if there is absolutely no way to obtain the missing information - such as a new plane with no registration assigned to it (not even a test registration).

Other countries' registries are not necessarily available online, but N numbers are - you can look them up on the front page of the FAA website. The FAA isn't the only source (or even the best source) of such information.

Every effort should be made to make a positive identification of the aircraft. Simply saying "the tail number isn't visible from my current shooting location" isn't enough. When I'm shooting, if the tail number isn't visible from my location, I will walk around to the side of the aircraft and focus in on the tail number for identification purposes in the future.
