Hi all,

I am considering in investing in the Sigma 2x teleconverter to try and get closer to some aircraft and possibly get some high altitude aircraft shots. I have a couple of questions. Firstly, I am using a Nikon D3100 with a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 so I was just wondering if the teleconverter is compatible with my lens and body? Secondly, because of a crop sensor my 70-200 is a 105-300 so does it double to 210-600? If so will that be long enough to get some contrail shots? Lastly, what are the pros and most importantly the cons of a teleconverter? Is a lot of light and quality lost?

Thanks in advance for everyones help

The following link indicates several flavours of the 70-200 2.8 retaining AF capability:

I don't have any experience with the Sigma kit, I would do some digging and ensure the Sigma teleconverter plays nice with the D3100.

Effective focal length will indeed be doubled, as will the aperture from f2.8 to f5.6. This will certainly get you closer to high level traffic.

Keep in mind that while doubling your focal range, the quality(sharpness and contrast) of your images will decrease to the point that a superzoom like the 50-500mmOS will rival the lens/tc combination. Some say 'but you can always take off the teleconverter and have a great quality 70-200mm f/2.8'. And to them I say 'yes but now you lose 70-140mm'(a sacrifice I would not be wanting to make)
