Hi all. I am in the market for a new tele. I currently have the 55-300 and was wondering if you guys think the 70-300 would be worth the upgrade. If not, what other lenses do you think would be good investments? The body is a D3100.

Thanks,

John

What do you find lacking in the 55-300? The 70-300 is in most regards moderately better, but it's not going to be a huge improvement over the 55-300, which itself isn't too shabby.

I would save my money to put towards a 70-200VR2. THAT would be an upgrade! Otherwise those two lenses are pretty close to each other in terms of performance with the 70-300mm having an edge

Ok thanks guys. I think I will go for the $1400 70-200 then once the funds are available.

Kind of depends on what your main use of the lens is going to be? I have the 70-300 VR, my brother has the 55-300VR. The 70-300VR auto focuses much faster, has the auto-focus over ride, meaning you can grab the focus ring and manually focus the camera without having to flip off the little focus slider switch back and forth from auto to manua, and has two settings for the VR. Normal, to allow for better panning, and Active, for when you yourself are moving a lot, like in a plane, or on a car, boat etc. The 70-300VR also has better glass, although there sure isn't anything to complain about with the quality of the 55-300. So for fast action, quicker focus, better VR, the 70-300VR is a much better lens than the 55-300. But if you don't need those things, than you don't need that lens. The 55-300 covers a very versatile zoom range and since you already have that lens, decide what the main reason you want a different lens is....and go from there.

I have a Nikon D3200 and a Nikkor 55-300 AF-5 DX ED VR and I am unhappy as can be. But, let me say for the record, it could be a user problem and not equipment problem.

I came here today with questions about what I may be doing wrong because I am not getting the image quality I think I should from this camera and lens. I seem to always get fuzzy images and my focus seems to degrade from one end of a plane to the other. I have tried every setting I can think of and am now shooting Aperture Mode with ISO 200 and after shooting 200 images today I did not find a single image that will pass inspection here.

So, take it for what its worth, but maybe another lens should be thought of before buying.
