Spotting At Newark Question

A.Net,

If you read my previous posts, you will know that I am taking a trip this summer and connecting at EWR and FRA. I was wondering where (What terminal, concourse, ect.) I should go to get good pictures of planes and the runway at EWR. I was also looking for an updated list of every airline that flies into EWR and every destination and aircraft that is sent. I have looked at some sites like wikipedia (of course) but with the recent additions like Icelandair, Virgin America and other UA destinations being added, I was wondering if there was a database that was accurate and up to date. I want to know all this information so I can figure out where to go to get the best pictures and spotting opportunities. Thanks to all the people who answer all my questions in advance!

Thanks,
Aerovtp

In terms of looking ahead at the flights that are passing through EWR, try this, hopefully this helps...

The problem with the website is that it doesn't list everything in one snapshot

Take a look at FlightAware for a few days and jot down flights that look interesting to you - not sure what you're after, but the list of really interesting stuff shouldn't be that long. Then, go to the individual airline web sites and look up their schedules for your date. It's far from scientific but will help you plan your trip.

EDIT: With regard to the second part of your question, you can scroll back in FlightAware to the previous Wednesday to see flights. You have a few weeks before your trip, so if you do that for a few weeks in a row you'll have a good idea of the regular traffic for that day.

If you're flying UA, then you are in luck. Go down to I think its gate 85--88 or so. Great view of taxiway and runway.

Thanks for the suggestions. I decided to go onto Kayak and "book flights" from different airlines and their destinations. I was able to find the arrivals and departures for all the major airlines on the date. I will post it here for the benefit of others once I am finished.

Thanks to everyone who has given information so far especially 727LOVER,

To keep the ball rolling in this thread (My 8 hours at EWR are going to be amazing because of this thread) does anyone know if the active runways change based on the wind conditions and if that changes where you should go to do spotting. I want to be able to predict where to go the night before flying because I will know the wind direction by then.

Thanks a lot guys and keep it coming,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but... if it's blowing from the north:

4L is used for takeoffs and 4R is used for landings

If the winds shift to the opposite direction (south, southwest, southeast I don't know it's whatever),

22R is used for takeoffs and 22L is used for landings.

In terms of where to go, you could drive up and down Route 95... just kidding ALTHOUGH it's fun to try to race to planes I suggest you try it, anyways, uhhhh.... 727LOVER, got anything? If this was Boston I could help you.

Oh I am no EWR expert by any means. I haven't even been there since 2006. But perimeter wise, EWR is very hard. If you are at the gate 87-88 spot, you'll be able to watch all ops on the 4s/22s no matter the wind direction.

Very true, very true. If you look on Google Maps around EWR, you'll notice that on all four sides there is virtually NO WHERE to stand and photograph nice heavies taking off into the sunset. In all seriousness, Route 95 is literally your best bet, I got a few nice shots of a Jetblue A320 landing parallel to my Honda.
Get someone to drive you though because you'll soon find yourself experiencing a highway incursion if you don't look at the road ahead.

I was there on Friday to catch the United Retro jet departing. As soon as I got set up in my spot, thinking there was no reason for them to switch, they switched. Two minutes of silence was the only clue before I was looking at landing lights. And of course, I missed the United. But not without cursing up a storm.

So, apparently, wind direction isn't the only factor, because there was no change in the wind, as shown by the flag I was observing.

Good luck

There are some spots off airport where you could shoot from, but local law enforcement is VERY aggressive about moving you out if you have a camera. For all the shooting I've done around NYC, I've never bothered with EWR.

I haven;t been herein ages. You would probably only last in there for 15-30 minutes, so time it with something you REEEEEEEAAAALLLLY want.

A.Net,

With airlines leaving EWR like Alitalia and Singapore, does anyone know about any airlines that are going to come in to EWR. I'm kind of sad that all of EWR's traffic is going to JFK. I don't want EWR to become just a UA airport. UAis also focusing on IAH, ORD, and SFO and I feel that everyone is just pushing EWR down. Thoughts Anyone??

Thanks,

The north parking is a good spot for overhead shots as pointed out by 727Lover, and I spent a nice afternoon there a few years ago. I kept a low profile, only exiting my car when something I wanted to photograph was in range. Even better, if you could find a place to sit in your car and take pictures, you'd probably be in great shape. Be aware that when I was there the daily rate for the lot was $15, and I was a bit dismayed when I exited after about 90 minutes that the rate was not pro-rated. I guess $15 for 90 minutes of entertainment isn't that bad, and one of my shots taken that day is among my top 5 most popular shots on A.net. Well worth the money.

So sorry mate....between my arriving flight, 2 gate changes, locating my sister (who was joining me onwards) and disorganized boarding for international, I could not get material for a trip report. However I did see the following from the lists above:

Quoting aerovtp (Reply 10):
British Airways 13:20 18:25
El Al 5:45 13:30
Jet Airways 12:30 18:30

SAS (Oslo) 13:10 --
SAS (Sweden) 12:55 17:20

I don't know which SAS I saw but it was a 340.

Another thing, I swear I counted 3 x BA - 1 x 757 and 2 x 772. Did I make a mistake?

I just spent a combined 9 hours at EWR inside the terminal during two recent stopovers and found some good spots to get shots from. I'm still going through them all and will put some of the good ones up here. Among the interesting ones, for me (with KRSW being my "home" airport, not much big or interesting comes through there), were the SAS, TAP, Lufthansa, quite a few StarAliance aircraft and I was able to get some with the evolving New York skyline in the background. I'll add some links once the shots are up.

I finished the trip and let me put it this way, Newark is a pretty annoying place to do plane spotting. To move from one concourse to another, you need to go through security all over again. The AirTrains are okay to spot from but it gets old and if you stay at the stations or in the trains for some time, airport workers tell you that you cannot take pictures.
I have taken a couple of good photos though and will upload them later. Overall, very happy with Frankfurt but pretty disappointed with the way my Newark visit went considering I spent so much time planning. Of my 7 hours there, I probably spent a good portion of that in security.

Thanks,
Aerovtp

Sorry that Newark didn't really work out, not surprised about security, but it sounds like your best bet was to attach a camera to a bird and have it fly around the outside of the terminals.   Other than that, some airports are just tough to get real good and close up shots, but at least you got some good experience.
