Hi Airliners.net,

I'm looking for a proper EF tele-lens of Canon. I have a Canon EOS 40D. I want to use an other lens than mine (28-80mm). What is a good lens to use while planespotting?

Thanks in advance,
Arne Uten

Hi u10arne,

Depending on what you like to shoot, it can vary. I don't have any experience with these lenses, but would recommend the 70-200mm f/4 or the 100-400mm.

The all important question - what's your budget? I'm guessing it doesn't run to the new 200-400mm at 12K!

Cheers,

Colin

My budget? It doesn't run to 12K.   My dad has a 70-200mm f/2.8 IS Lens (also EF) which is a really nice lens. But it's very pricey. I can borrow that lens but I want one for my own. I don't know what my budget is exactly but I guess around 1 000€ (about 1300 USD or 850£). I'm actually looking for a second-hand lens. But if there are good lenses which are in my budget and fits on my 40D please tell me!

There's a site belgiumdigital.be where photographers can purchase second-hand lenses/cameras so maybe I should take a look there. But if you know some other good lenses, feel free to comment.

Arne

You might just get a 100-400 used for that price - which of course has enormous flexibility. If quality is most important, then the 70-200 f4 is extremely good - the new one with IS would be first choice, but I'm not sure how easy that will be to find used, The old non-IS version is also very good, and used should be relatively inexpensive (easily within your budget).

If the flexibility of a zoom is not important, then the 300 f4 is excellent value for money - it aslo works well with a 1.4 convertor.

Cheers,

Colin

Thank you Colin!

I've found a 70-200 f2.8 but it costs 2000€ (2700$). So I think I'm gonna borrow my dad's 70-200 for a while

The 70-200LIS is 1100 Euro on the French Amazon site. The 70-200s are about the best lenses optically that aren't primes.

I've got the 70-300LIS at 1300 Euro (apparently second hand ones are as common as unicorns so you may struggle getting a used one.)

The first question I'd be asking myself, as well as budget, is what focal lengths do I need? I think you need to consider what you actually need before making a decision. There's no point getting a 70-200 if you need a 100-400 for example. If your budget won't stretch to a 70-200 F/4 IS, there's nothing wrong with the standard 70-200 F/4. While IS has it's place and is useful at times, the 70-200 F/4 non-IS is the one to go for on a tight budget, assuming it's the focal lengths you need.

I would question whether you need the f2,8 version of the 70-200mm - you are paying a hefty premium fo an extra stop. Unless you do a lot of low light photography, the f4 version will serve you well.

Colin

Agreed. You really can't go wrong with the 70-200 F/4 L. For the price, there's probably nothing better, and it's not all that much more than several lesser lenses. It's sharp almost right up to the end (I have shots in the DB taken at 197mm), durable, and a huge bargain. A monopod or a good tripod may also be able to help compensate for the lack of IS if you're shooting in low or marginal light.

I'll ask the question I always ask: what issue are you trying to solve by getting another lens? Do you not have enough zoom? Are the images too soft? etc....

Also:

I got mine for around $500.

My current lens is very old... I don't have enough zoom, and my images are too soft, sometimes it seems that my images are focused properly (on the 3" screen) but when I open the images in a RAW-editor it is all blurry... Or just not the focus I wanted...

I have taken lots of pictures with my dad's 70-200mm lens and the difference is phenomenal... These photos are much much better than the photos I take with my old 28-80mm lens.
